2004 F-150 5.4L 3V cvt selenoid
dealership quoted me nearly $1000 to replace 1 cvt selenoid. does that sound right? and how difficult is the work if i do the repair myself? 2004 F-150 XLT 4wd 5.4L 3v SuperCrew

Way to expensive. Sounds like they quoted you to replace the cam phaser not the solenoid. Solenoid is easy, I bet it's less than an hour of mechanic time and a $150-$200 part.
