55 ford 5 speed direct transmission help

Okay so my dad and i are restoring my Grandpas old 55 and we have swapped in a 292 V8 with a 5 speed direct tranny and have run into some problems. My put the gear shift into the transmission and moved it into 1st and now it wont go into any gears. I just want to know if anyone can help me understand what went wrong and how we can get it operational. I really need some help please!!

What was the donor of the engine? What was the donor of the transmission (if different)?
Was the trans and engine mated before - did they both come out of the same donor together?
How much modification did you do - switch to hanging pedals, etc or just hook up the clutch linkage and go... did you have to modify the clutch linkage a ton?
What model of 5 sp - there is almost none that I know of that are direct in the top gear?... I'd love to add it to my trans database/article.

the engine and tranny both came out of the same donor and i believe they came out of another heavier duty 55. we didnt do much modifiying to anything except the front motor mount position. we just connected the clutch linkage and went from their but still nothing is working. i believe the transmission is out of sync and i have no idea how to get the gears back into the right position. the serial number on the tag of the tranny is c-90102 and then underneath that it has 33 55 i have no idea what these numbers mean

Welcome to the forum. My '56 shop manual shows a light duty and a heavy duty five speed direct drive transmission. Pictures indicate they have three shift forks. Your second sentence is unclear to me but if there is any chance the top has been off the tranny I would pull the top back off and make sure the forks are in the shift collars and you can position the slides and the gears on their respective shafts. Be careful of the detent ***** and springs.

It was probably already in a gear. So take the shifter out get a flashlight and a screwdriver and make sure everything is in neutral before putting it back in. This can happen if the transmission was in gear when you pulled the shifter out.
