cab sheet metal repair

Originally I was going to have the metal work on my 54 cab farmed off to someone else.....but after some encouragement here I have decided to attempt it myself first!

The worst areas of damage on my truck are both front cab corners/mounts. You can see pics of the damage in my garage. I am going to need both front floor section, especially the RH side. Also need both front cab corners, front cab mount brackets, and reinforcement gussets. The rockers on both sides look Ok, but can't see how they are under the cab cowls till they are removed.

My question is.....where do you start? I know I need to brace front to back, and side to side to keep the cab from twisting, but what other precautions do I need to take before I start cutting?

Can you post some pics of the repair areas? It's probably best if you can repair one area at a time. Also make sure your doors are fitting good BEFORE you start.

Do you have the patch panels? What type of welder?

Pics of damage can be seen in My Garage. Looking at a 135 amp gas MIG welder from Eastwood. Haven't gotten the patch panels yet, but will probably get them from Mid-Fifty.

I would start by cleaning the effected areas. Be sure to remove any sound deadner or undercoating. Then make the patches, making them just big enough to get rid of the bad metal. Use the patches as a pattern to trim the effected areas. And as mentioned above do one area at a time and be patient. By the way looking at the pictures it does not look to bad.

Good Luck,
Paul
