Thrust Bearings

I had a question about Ford's use of Thrust Bearings on the 300. I recently tore into one and was a little shocked to find a thrust bearing on the fifth main bearing slot. Aren't they normally supposed to be at either end? Is this something Ford does?

I don't know if it's just a Ford thing or not, but that's where they put it.

No it is not just a Ford idea AMC Chrysler and GM have done it. I have never talked to an engineer about the reasoning for doing it,however it makes some sense in that the splash lube of those thrust faces would be better in some central area. Kotzy
