As far as what is out there, here is a comprehensive list of all diesel fuel additives registered with the EPA--> Alphabetical List of Registered Diesel Additives | US EPA

Typically I use 2-stroke oil, biodiesel, or powerservice. I like these because they are available locally (bio rarely). The two former I use for lubricity mainly and the latter for cleaning and lubricity. My additive use follows an ebb and flow pattern, sometimes I just rely on the additives already in the fuel.

I've just owned my diesel since May, and being the "oil nut" that I am and already keeping it on hand for my gassers, I frequently use Marvel Mystery Oil. If used by itself, I use 6 oz per 10 gallons as recommended by a company person on their forums...

But, TCW3 Two Stroke Oil is often recommended for adding lubricity and even though I don't think that I get much (any) completely unadditized fuel like they used in that study of diesel fuel additives, I believe that a little extra lubricity can't be a bad thing and so if used by itself, I use it at 1 oz per 4 gallons or 2.5 oz per 10 gallons...

However, most of the time in the warm months, I've used a mix of the two at 4 oz MMO + 2 oz of TCW3 per 10 gallons...

Now, with colder temps coming on and based on good reviews and local recommendations, I use Power Service in the white bottle at 3 oz per 10 gallons and add 1 oz of TCW3 in with it. I noticed a worse smelling exhaust after adding the PS, is that to be expected? ...

...as I said, I'm new to my truck and diesels and this is just what I've used so far...they are all easily obtained and have good reviews - depending on where you read! They may not be everyone's favorites but based on all the research I've done, they each have desirable attributes...

I like the MMO for maintaining a clean system...

I like TCW3 for it's clean burning lubricating ability...in small doses...

I like Power Service to clean and make sure things flow well in the colder temps and the added cetane for easier starting...

I know diesel drivers that hardly ever use anything except maybe the occasional dose of Power Service in cold weather....but, these additives aren't expensive and if used regularly, I believe will help maintain a good working system...

Of course, I could be wrong!

I am also a fan of Diesel Kleen with 2-cycle oil.I use it in every fill up.I am bad about measuring so I am sure I get too much of each but at 276k the truck likes what I am doing.

Best cetane boost is Amsoil, Rolling big power, or RBP is the best value, 16oz treats 500 gallons for 26$. They sell one gallon also that treats 5,000 gallons. It last a long time. JMOP.

I use Diesel Kleen also. It does provide as much lubricity as others, but it is not expensive and easy to obtain. There's a thread that has an additive test which shows how much lubricity each additive actually provides The connectivity on my ship is poor so I can't search for it, but it's on here somewhere.

I've got over 213K miles and it's still running strong so I'm not complaining.

Fun fact- Opti-Lube mixes up their products from ingredients sourced from Lubrizol. A list of Lubrizol additives are in the list I linked earlier. I'm not trying to imply that opti-lube isn't good, lot's of people swear by it.

I usually use Powerservice. Mainly because of availability. I'm trying Howe's right now. Don't like it as well as PS. It seems to make things a bit noisier. As far as cleaning agents. In my experience, Gumout Diesel Fuel Treatment works about as well if not better than anything I've ever used.

I use Stanadyne Lubricity Additive, but I have wondered about additives that boost Cetane - does anyone who uses them think they noticeably increase engine power?
