I have an '86 w/ a leaking side fuel tank. I parted out an '88 gasser. Can I remove the gas fuel pump, install the 6.9 suction tube and use this tank?? Is there anything else I have to do to vent the tank for diesel fuel??
The tank should work ok. As you said, use the sender for the sender for the 86. Depending on the two tanks you may need the bands that hold the tank on from the gasser.
the notch and tab for the sending units are in different spots from the factory so your not suppose to be able to switch , but all you need to do is cut the tab off of the gas tank and then the diesels sending unit will fit ! thats what i did several years ago and all is working fine !
The gasser tank is zinc coated. The diesel one is not. This makes a difference as diesel with breakdown the zinc and it will destroy your ip and injectors. That is the reason that the senders are different, so you cant use the gasser tank.
Fuel tanks are terne coated (Lead). It's cheaper than zinc. You can double check by putting some acid (from old battery or muraic from hardware). Zinc will foam and dissolve Terne won't.
They aren't going to plate the inside with something different than on the outside. You could also take some diesel fuel and put it in where you can see it. The outside is fine.
Save time and do the acid test. It'll only take a drop of acid to find out what you need to know. Just be careful the fumes from Muratic acid are dangerous. And battery acid can burn you. Do it on the outside and undercoat over the spot to protect it when you're done.
Galvanized + Zinc + BAD! Terne Plate + Lead = Good! Acid will attack zinc as will Dino#2. Acid will not attack Lead and Dino#2 will not attack it either. I don't know of any Manufacturer that uses Galvanized for fuel tanks. It's more expensive than Terne and harder on tooling therefore more expensive to process.
I think the concern is temperarily storing Dino#2 in a Galvanized container.
