Cant Control Heater Temp

2008 250, SD, 5.4. New to me 08 with standard climate controls...so no dual zone. While doing the usual warm up routine, as we northerners are familiar with, this thing will not control the heat temp once at op temp. I’m constantly playing with it! (the heater control that is :O) Upon start-up with the control **** set full clock wise all is ok until it’s fully warmed up. When I turn it down to compensate there is almost no resolution and a big hysteresis (lag). It goes from very hot, cooking you out of the truck hot, to cool, no in between. It acts a little differently Side Street driving vs. highway, I’d imagine due to air flow across the radiator, but exhibits the same lack of control.
If you turn it towards cool and do so one click at a time and get to the 3 o’clock position then go one more click CCW it goes from very hot to cool.
No Hot, warm, cool, cold control as with other vehicles?
I hear the mix door moving. Coolant is full. Truck has 47K on the clock. Warranty’s up in two weeks. Is this normal op mode for these trucks or would you say there’s a problem?
I’m certainly not happy with constantly having to adjust it.

It sounds like the heater blend door motor is a little crazy. Those have given lots of trouble and it seems to be a common problem.

In short, when they go crazy, they cannot self calibrate themselves and vary from non-functioning to erratic operation.

Answer to "cant control heatrer temp"

I did a search before starting a new thread but you know how the search features work, you have to be more or less exact. So I googled it and it brought me right back to FTE. Here is the TSB from Henery describing the exact problem Im having with my manual control system. Oh and its not covered under any warranty once the 3/36 and or private dealer 3K/60Day is expired. Im going to google the part now.

Some 2008-2009 F-Super Duty vehicles with a build date before 11/06/08, and equipped with DATC (Dual Automatic Temperature Control) may exhibit a side-to-side temperature difference greater than 15 degrees Fahrenheit (8.3 degrees Celsius). A temperature difference of less than 15 degrees Fahrenheit (8.3 degrees Celsius) would be considered normal and no repair attempt should be made. Also, it is not necessary to replace the EATC control head or the HVAC. <o></o>
If equipped with manual climate control, vehicles may exhibit periods where the cabin temperature cannot be maintained with the control ****. Some customers may also complain the heat cannot be reduced without rotating the control **** well into the Cool/Blue range.<o></o>

Check Actuator Activity:<o></o>
DATC systems may be monitored with the IDS PID ($9910 and $9911 ). Manual A/C systems may be observed through the right side of the instrument panel with the glove compartment door positioned downward. <o></o>
Erratic PID activity or an actuator that appears to be erratically hunting for correct position during the condition should be replaced. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 412-01, for removal and installation details. <o></o>
The ignition key must be off when replacing the actuator, energizing the actuator before installation on the HVAC case will cause the part to become mis-positioned and correct orientation will be lost. Incorrect actuator operation may result.

They have updated that actuator a couple times. Once its replaced, i have not had to do it again but we had 6 trucks at work that all had to have it done at least once until they changed the part.

any idea what that actuator costs, My buddys pickup has the manual control heat **** and it does it. I have the same setup as him but I havent noticed a problem YET.

Looks to be anywhere from $22-$42 for that above PN 9C3Z-19E616-B. What I’m interested in is finding a new updated revision part that would have the latest electronic updates. I thought I saw a part with an BA suffix? I’m still looking. Dealer wants $33.
The TSB states you’re supposed to be able to visually see it actuate from the glove box opening. I very briefly looked tonight and I can see it but cannot see it actuate. For $33 bucks I’ll just replace it. I’ll follow up and let you all know if it solves the problem.

The only part that turns is a little white center piece. The only way I can see it is to mark it and watch the dot turn.

You will be missing some meat off your hand when u get done but it can be done.
