Dieseling.....

The $300 Wonder Truck took to dieseling pretty bad today.

Manuals should be here on Wed, according to USPS tracking....

Would it be safe to assume from the lack of power demonstrated in those videos I posted that the dieseling is most likely being caused by crappy timing?

It's possible the timing has something to do with it but it's often caused by too high of an idle speed.

Leaf,

I read your previous thread and enjoyed the videos and think you have done well @ $300.

1984-1986 were computer controlled [feedback system, as mentioned by someone else]. If ANYTHING is out of whack, the computer goes to the "limp home" mode, which locks the timing and makes the carburetor go rich. You have mentioned low power and I think high fuel consumption [could have been another thread?]. All of this is related. Once you get the manuals, you will be able to sort this out.

Hang in there... once sorted out, you will love the simplicity and reliability of the BIG six.

It takes air, fuel and spark to make the engine run. Since it's dieseling you still have all 3. The air and fuel are coming from the carb being too far open at idle(too high idle speed as was mentioned) and the spark is coming from hot spots in the combustion chamber. You can't do anything much about the hot spots, but you can get rid of the air and the fuel, and that should make it stop.
