Transmission cooler lines
My downpipe apparently has been rubbing on the line that goes into the front of the transmission and possibly cracked the fitting because it is leaking pretty bad. My first question is does anybody have that part number to just replace the line? Next question, does anybody know if I can have that line modified right where it enters the transmission so it won't rub on the downpipe. Last question, when removing this line, how much fluid is going to come out? I will pinch the rubber line up by the cooler but what about at the trans itself?

don't know the part number but when you remove it not too much will come out, you'll be fine. when you install the new one just wedge a pry bar between the two and give it a little gap between the two.

Thanks. I want to try to avoid this issue in the future though so just throwing a replacement line in there won't do the job. It will end up like this one. I need to either modify the angle of the line or direction of the line going into the transmission or shorten up the part after the 90* turn just enough to clear the downpipe.

I wonder if you could use a 90* fitting on the transmission and then run a straight piece of line back to the tranny? Mine has a slight kink in it too and needs to be redone.
James, You're selling your OBS!?

I'd sure like to so I can fix the superduty up and drive it... I can't keep throwing parts at two trucks...
I guess I will need to take my cooler line off and take it somewhere to see what somebody thinks. I need to get it away from that downpipe...

The lines are just 5/16 or 3/8 steel lines aren't they? Anybody know what kind of connections the trans has where they hook up? I haven't had mine apart yet.

Are they just flare fittings?

From what I've read, inverted flare... I called Ford and asked them to get a new fitting. But i'm not sure how to install with the flare... will the new fitting work with the old line?

Beats me! I guess you'll see when you get the fitting. I wonder if you could just put a flare in it with a double flare tool like you would use for brake lines?

I don't have a flare tool so I guess I will have to find someone who can do that...

Just got some new line, flared it, added some hose, attached it to the existing line and it looks like it is no longer leaking. Going in to the shop tomorrow for a fluid change and also going to an exhaust shop to see what they can do to keep my downpipe from causing all this trouble in the future...

Do you have room to maybe wrap the line with a rubber hose to play as a rub guard

Nope. It wouldn't have made a difference. The hanger that I had half azzed on my exhaust broke and the weight of the system dropped on that cooler line right at the fitting. After I have a few hangers welded on this shouldn't be a problem in the future.

Years ago I read on here about converting from 5/16" to 3/8" for better flow. I always thought about doing this but didn't know about the fittings.
