Red face 1997 Ford F800 5.9 Cummins Diesel

Hello! I am a first time poster, if I make a mistake please go easy on me.

I have been to the local Ford dealer and the "Ask the answer man" with no definite answer to my problem.

"I NEED HELP!"

I purchased the truck in Florida last Spring and was told that the truck had been sitting for about a year, it was a Florida State highway vehicle with 63,000 miles and 5500 on the hour gauge.

I took it for a short test drive and it seemed to run okay.

I started my trip home to Wisconsin and a few miles down the road the oil light came on and it started to run poorly. I stopped at a service station and replenished the oil to full. I started home again and about 150 miles I had the same trouble. I refilled the oil and could not find any leaks but there was oil on the frame and other parts under the truck. The truck kept on doing this and ran poorly most of the trip. Each time I stopped I checked for leaks an found none. I parked at the motel and put cardboard under the engine to see where and if it was leaking and in the morning it was still dry, NO LEAKS.

It ran like this for 900 miles then it started to run better and used less oil one gallon in 300 miles instead of every 150. By the time I got it home it was running okay but it still uses a lot of oil but it has more power.

I was told it may be the turbo but no one was certain. The dealer recommended that I start with the turbo and if that was not the problem at least I had eliminated one potentially problem part. As you know these parts are not cheap and that method of replacing every part until the problem is solve is ridiculous.

I hope some one has a better idea of what may be going on with this engine.

All suggestion are welcome.

Kindest regards,

Clifford

With a gallon of oil every 150 miles, you should have a significant amount of smoke blowing out the exhaust. The exhaust pipe should feel oily with that much consumption.

You may have better luck over at the Dodge or Cummins forums, then here.

IF THE TURBO SEAL IS GONE YOU WILL BE BLOWING OIL OUT OF THE EXHAUST ! there will be a big big huge cloud of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and it will look like you are fumigating the whole world ! if that is the case then dont drive the truck any more until fixed as the turbo can destroy the whole engine if it comes apart ! the return or drain line from the turbo can leak and it will pour oil out while running ! the running could be a loose hose on the turbos intake or fuel filters !

If the turbo seal(s) are leaking, the oil would be in the muffler, or in the aftercooler. Either way it would smoke more then usual. Did you check the fuel color and coolant ? If its black thats where your oil went.

Its probably leaking out of the compressor side.. Pull the intake tube off a check the shaft for play. With that much oil missing the inside of the turbo should be pretty wet.
