Rum company to give away 101 free tattoos - Chicago Sun-Times

Click the image to open in full size.
Free Sailor Jerry tattoos from this sheet will be offered on Saturday, January 14, 2011 at the Chicago Tattoo Company.

Updated: January 10, 2012 2:10AM

Chicago landlubbers can get the permanent look of the salty high seas thanks to a free tattoo extravaganza Saturday sponsored by a spiced rum company.

Sailor Jerry, purveyor of 92 proof spiced rum, is offering 101 complimentary Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins-designed tattoos between noon and midnight Saturday at the Chicago Tattooing and Piercing Company, 1017 W. Belmont. Tattoos are first come, first served and the limited designs include anchors, hearts dedicated to mom and dad, a shark and a growling wild cat’s head. Get there early — the tattoo shop is expecting a crowd.

The rum’s namesake, Collins was a sailor and Navy vet who started a famous Hawaiian tattoo shop in the 1930s. Saturday would have been his 101st birthday. He died in 1973.

DNA links 1991 killing to Colonial-era family - CNN.com

DNA links 1991 killing to Colonial-era family
By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 7:51 AM EST, Tue January 10, 2012

(CNN) -- DNA may help Seattle-area sheriff's deputies find a suspect in a 20-year-old killing after a comparison with genealogy records connected a crime-scene sample to a 17th-century Massachusetts family.

The DNA sample was taken in the death of 16-year-old Sarah Yarborough, who was killed on her high school campus in Federal Way, Washington, in December 1991.

In December, though, the department sent the DNA profile to California-based forensic consultant Colleen Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick compared the profile to others in genealogy databases and found the closest match was to the family of Robert Fuller, who settled in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1630 and had relatives who came over before him on the Mayflower.

While the descendents of Robert Fuller are likely to number in the thousands after nearly 400 years, geography and physical characteristics can help detectives narrow their search, Fitzpatrick said. In fact, Fitzpatrick said, since the DNA trace follows male descendants, there was "a high degree of probability" that the man police are looking is named Fuller.

Fitzpatrick said the DNA she used came from one of several major collections of genetic profiles, a practice she said was "really hot these days for genealogy." She said the people who donated DNA profiles to the database had either done their genealogy or had their DNA tested to trace their connections.

"It allows you to connect with relatives you can't trace through traditional documentation," she said.

***** tattoo gives man permanent erection
By David Edwards
Tuesday, January 10, 2012

A Iranian who set out to get a pithy phrase tattooed on his ***** got a little more than he bargained for.

The unnamed 21-year-old asked for the words “borow be salaamat” — translated as “good luck with your journeys” — and his girlfriend’s initial, “M,” on his ***** and ended up with a semi-permanent erection as a bonus.

Doctors from the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in Kermanshah, Iran diagnosed the man with a non-ischemic priapism, a condition where blood flowing out of the ***** is not sufficient enough to shrink the erection.

“In our case, most probably, the handheld needle penetrated the ***** too deep, creating an arteriovenous fistula,” the study authors wrote in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The Mayo Clinic defines an arteriovenous fistula as an “abnormal connection between an artery and a vein.”

The man’s painful ***** had no erections for eight days following the tattooing and then he “noticed longer-than-usual sleep-related erections,” according to the study’s authors. “This progressed, within a week, to a constantly half-rigid *****, day and night.”

As anyone who has ever watched a Viagra advertisement knows, men are advised to “seek medical help for an erection lasting longer than four hours.”

In the case of the Iranian man, doctors had to implant a shunt in his *****, allowing the excess blood to drain.

“Predictably, the procedure was unsuccessful,” the study authors noted. “Because of the painless nature of erections, moderately good preservation of erectile function during intercourses, and disappointment with former surgery, the patient has declined to undergo further therapies, and lives with his condition.”

“Based on our unique case, we discourage penile tattooing,” they added.

The man, however, said he had no regrets.

Almost 1 In 3 U.S. Warplanes Is a Robot | Danger Room | Wired.com

Remember when the military actually put human beings in the cockpits of its planes? They still do, but in far fewer numbers. According to a new congressional report acquired by Danger Room, drones now account for 31 percent of all military aircraft.

To be fair, lots of those drones are tiny flying spies, like the Army’s Raven, that could never accommodate even the most diminutive pilot. (Specifically, the Army has 5,346 Ravens, making it the most numerous military drone by far.) But in 2005, only five percent of military aircraft were robots, a report by the Congressional Research Service notes. Barely seven years later, the military has 7,494 drones. Total number of old school, manned aircraft: 10,767 planes.

....the report doesn’t mention some of the unique vulnerabilities of the drones. There’s no mention of the malware infection that reached into the drone cockpits at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, a story Danger Room broke. Nor does it go into the workload problems for military imagery analysts caused by the proliferation of the drones full-motion video “Death TV,” which is pushing the military toward developing selective or “thinking” cameras. The ethical issues attendant to remote-control war also go unexplored.
