High Idle solenoid question

When is it supposed to kick in? I figure right after start up for X amount of time.

Im going to check it for power but just wondering how much of a window I have to check it.

Its controlled by a temp sensor mounted nearby in the head. When the engine gets up to X degrees it shuts off. (I'm not sure off the top of my head what temperature X is) So on a cold start you should have several minutes before its a problem.

Also the solenoid doesn't have enough power to push the throttle lever on the pump. You have to tap the pedal first, then the solenoid will hold it at the set position.

you can also adjust the high idle speed by screwing the plunger in or out. I 've got mine set just over 1000 RPM for the really cold months. I'm also going to add a manual switch so I can kick it on when parked.

I am thinking my Solenoid is shot because the plunger just falls all over the place on the 90....am thinking about pulling the one off the 84...

Thanks fellas.

Is it straight 12v (+/- some) or is it regulated down? I would hate to put a manual switch on it (12v) & it only be a 6v & burn it up.

Nope one side of the switch gets 12v, when its cold the switch is closed, when the coolant heats up it opens and cuts power to the solenoid.

You can setup a manual switch with 12volts. Also be aware that the cold advance solenoid is also controlled by the same wire from the temperature switch so if you just want the high idle you need to put a diode in. Oilburners has an article on it.

Didn't know you could set the high idle level. Guess thats why mine is at 1200rpm which seems to be higher than most peoples.

Its only adjustable to a certain point. Too far and you'll be bumping your actual idle higher too.

Interesting. My idle is 700rpm or so which i guess needs to be a little higher for the e4od.
