53 Y Block not run since 1976 , advise pls !
Hi Guys
Further on from my newbie thread , we have already had a quick look at the motor and my mechanic reckons its seized or just tight due to not being used since 1976 . We did find oil on the dip stick but that means nothing.
Have removed plugs and added some diesel to pots to soak into the rings and hopefully help loosen things up a bit.
IF we do get it to turn over {by hand} what are the MUST DO's with this Y engine 239 cu in thats been standing this long before we even consider trying to fire her up.
All advise greatfully received , heres a pick of the lump !

What are your plans for the engine? Going to keep it? If so, I'd pass on any quick-fix stuff just to hear it run. I'd yank it and see what's up inside. If it was running in '76, it was on leaded gas and that tends to lead to sludge. Who knows what shape it was in or how regular maintenance was just before it was parked. It really costs very little to pull it apart, clean everything up, and if it's in good shape, paint it and put it together with new gaskets. Then you'll be able to drive it with peace of mind for a good long time. If you find stuff that needs fixing, you can decide whether to put the money into it or find an alternative.

I agree with Ross he has good points.
I noticed that your intake is red. Could you post the part number that you see. I thought all 239's were yellow. It should start with EBV
I found nuts well up in the exhaust manifold on my that had been sitting since about 1972, so it's best to clean it up good before trying to start after sitting that long.

I knew the condition of mine (parked for 8 years, by me/myself/and I)... and while I oiled it and soaked it and and, thought everything was good (carb was closed up so no mice down the intake, etc)... No leaks when parked, mine sprung all kinds of leaks after I started driving it. I have a few gasket kits arriving on the 6th (according to shippers).
So, that said... 1976 - save yourself the headache of putting all new seals in after you put plates on it and do it now, I'd all but promise ya it's going to need them.
