Buying used 7.3 excursion ?'s
Buying the wife an excursion with a 7.3 psd. Looking at a 2002 with 121k miles. Any specific items to look for/check out. Isn't there 2 different trannys that came in them? If so how do I know what to get. I currently have a 97 f350 7.3 psd with a 5speed Manual in it. Any help would be great thanks

Only one tranny, the 4R100. In 2001, some (mine) have the mechanical diode. Check this for general things to look for... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...questions.html
Good luck! At 121K, there is a LOT of life left in the motor!!

Yup, that link has some good things to look for.
Common rust places on these are on the bottom of the door lips, the area below the door opening where the doors rest up against, and behind the bottom outside window seals.
Also check the 4x4 thoroughly for operation. You not only need to turn the switch and hear the transfer case engage, but you need to move it and turn the wheels full crank to see if the wheels bind. The system often fails in the vacuum hubs, so the transfer case will still engage, but the hubs won't.
Check trans fluid and smell it to make sure it doesn't smell burnt and still looks red.
Like the link says, just check operation of everything in general- windows, door locks, lights, etc.
Oh, door lock mechanisms tend to fail over time. Maybe not yet at 121k, but it could. They should snap up and down quick, but lock it once and go check all the doors. Even the back window fails sometimes too and some people don't think to check it.
See if it includes any service history. You may want to think about doing a trans flush and change some other fluids soon.
Check the brakes by stepping on them hard when out for a drive. Not super hard, just not easy. It shouldn't pull to one side or shutter, but they do sometimes. You may need pads, rotors, calipers, or all three if it does.
Shocks are often neglected as are bump stops. They can all affect the driveability of the truck. I hear the steering stabilizer does too, though I've not done that to mine yet to know the difference it makes. If it has the stock shocks, I'd get rid of those ASAP. I can't believe the '02 7.3 I just bought had the factory shocks and steering stabilizer on it at 150k.
Interiors of Excursions are often in much better shape than comparable Super Duties since they were more often family vehicles instead of work vehicles. If the interior is really beat, you may want to move on if it can't be cleaned (like if parts are missing, damaged severely). The front driver's seat often shows wear too, which is common in both the Excursions and Super Duties.

Just bought my 108K 2000 7.3 Limited for $18K and had to drop another $4K to replace tires, drive train, shocks, and something that cost about $500 (dont remember the part) on the front end and still consider it a steal. You figure the truck which had a $48K sticker on it if bought new today would easily go for $60K.

I knew it was a good deal then; I did try taking a cahiers check for $15,500 but owner was firm. Even though it's XLT trim level, has leather interior! All the mods were done, except the DP Tuner. I installed in June 2008. I've really enjoyed the room, comfort, and range with the 44(+/-) gallon tank!
