I changed my fuel filter on my '96 not long ago. I used the "tool". Even with the tool, it was a drag (room to maneuver, gas drippings, etc., and the toughest part: getting the filter out of it Godzilla bracket).
You might want to unhook the battery and relieve the pressure in the fuel line (look for the tire-gauge type deal sticking up on your fuel rail -- cover it with a towel and push the needle...)

There is no way I have found to not get the gas shower. The Haynes manual recommends tripping the inertia switch behind the kick panel and running it till it stalls then releasing the pressure.... Still I got the gas shower !!! Also a (B.F.S.)big screwdriver helps to get the filter out of the bracket too .safety glasses also a must!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Nov-02 AT 04:29 PM (EST)]Get the tool, its usually nothing more that a piece of plastic that releases the flange inside the connector. You risk screwing up the connectors with a screwdriver. Once you get it its a 10 min job. I usually just remove the fuse for the fuel pump and let the truck sit overnight or a few hours. Minimal gas shower but you'll still get some... After all its a fuel line thats full of fuel.
