OK - so I spent my final day of my 'working on my truck' aligning the trans and engine to the mounting holes - tightened everything down and now the engine/trans is officially set in place! I removed the drive shafts (for those who never had a F2/F3 - there are two drive shafts) and noticed I am 1 3/4" too long as the front drive shaft is for the straight six - with whichever trans that came with this truck (remember - there was no engine and trans when I bought this truck). So I will drop it off to my guy who will make this right.

I need tires.... So where does everyone go to get tubes and tires? I am also debating with this: do I go with 17x7.00 or 17x7.50 tires? I like the look of the wider 7.50 tires - but I think 7.00 are supposed to be stock on this truck...

Anyone?

I will have to focus on the new job so very little will get done on the truck until the weekends now.

AFAIK the trans was in the same place with a V8 or a 6, that's why the radiator could be moved forwards for the 6's. I suspect you got a driveshaft from a truck with a longer wheelbase.

The drive shaft(s) are stock and came with the truck when I bought it - the radiator bracket was in the '6' position as it had a straight six (stock) in it - but as I mentioned before - there wasn't an engine or trans in it when I bought it.

Also, without being the expert - I do know there are / were different transmissions you can get (or put in here) as the trans cover pan does not have the slot cut out for the emergency brake handle on it - as would be needed for the trans I now have in it....

So there was a different trans in here previously.

Picked up the drive shaft this morning - he took 1 3/4" off and welded it right up - painted it and made sure the U-Joint was set correctly (which it was - but always good to have an extra set of eyes on it) and lubed everything up - for $50.

Can't complain.

I am hoping to get some work done on it this weekend as my new job has me beat every day (too much thinking!).

I also have a few other things to get accomplished this week which are Route 66 related and not truck related.

I still need to get tires for this thing....

I need to know where anyone gets small Holley carb parts (2-barrel)? I am missing some small parts and need to get them without buying another whole carb......

Spent a few hours on the truck today. Was able to finalize all of the brakes and the rear drums are on and I will pick up the front drums later this week. I have them at the brake shop getting cleaned up and trued.

Was able to get most of the oil lines in and all the coolant lines are in as well.

I have to finish up rebuilding the carb and start wrapping up the fuel lines next.

I tried to reinstall the front driveshaft and realized my guy didn't take enough off - so I need another 7/8" cut - which I will drop it off to him Monday to get fixed.

I am shopping for tires and should have some in the next week or two.

IT IS ALIVE! The flat head was finally started today - if only for a few seconds.
I have been SUPER swamped with SO many other things these last few weeks I just took the bull by the horns and had to get this thing fired up today!

I wanted to make sure it turned over and there were no major leaks or noises. There are exhaust manifolds on it - but no pipes or mufflers, so this is why it is loud. Also, the fuel pump is being stubborn so it died shortly thereafter this video ended.... I had to use my buddy's 53 Ford car carburetor as mine is fighting me and we do not have any water / coolant in the radiator as I am still wrapping that part of it up.

We fired it up 3 separate times throughout the day and it fired right up and ran nice and smooth all three times.

I have a few parts and pieces to get before I can let this thing run for a while to break it in. I will try to do that in 2 weeks as I have some traveling to do....

Another milestone!

Hey all - it has been a while but I have been SUPER BUSY with a few things.
My time has been spent taking care of things on the route (Route 66 of course) and purchased a historic garage (built in 1896) - so I spend every other month up there working on it WHILE I am trying to write a book on Route 66 in Kansas.

I need to start getting back on the truck as the weather will start cooling off in the next few months and I just want it done already!

I still am working on getting tires and tubes so I can have a driving frame.
More updated will come - just wanted to everyone to know - I'm not dead....

Check out the article Hemmings did on it:

Starting to get the liquids flowing on the truck again. Picked up a CLEAN windshield with NEW rubber AND a rebuilt carb for the engine for (drum roll please......) $100. The guy wanted to get rid of them - and I wanted to take them from him! I have my buddy's car carb on the engine now, but there is a difference and will swap the two on Monday. I will store the glass and rubber until the cab is painted.....
