1951 F1 Flathead V8 Flywheel Teeth Problem

Hello all,

I want to replace thew ring gear on my flywheel and I counted 112 Teeth. When I went to advance auto they asked me if I had 164 or 184 tooth flywheel, 112 wasnt even an option. I checked auto zone and napa and they didnt even have this ring listed. I checked classic haulers and they didnt have anything listed either. Anyone have any ideas where I can find the correct 112 tooth ring or can someone chime in if the 164 or 184 will work. I wouldnt think they would because of the number of teeth or the pitch of the teeth but I am no expert by any means. Thanks in advance!!!

You expect an autoparts store partscluck in this day and age to know what's correct and what ain't for a 60 year old vehicle? Hell, most wouldn't know what's correct for a 30 year old vehicle!

Then there's this to consider: Most autoparts stores don't have older vehicle parts listed on their computers, but are listed in paper parts catalogs, usually stashed under the counter.

The trick is...to get the clucks to actually look in them.

8BA-6384-A (replaced 8BA-6384) .. 112T M/T Flywheel Ring Gear / Obsolete

Applications: 1948/53 Truck 239 / 1949/53 Ford Passenger Car 239.

COLLECTORS AUTO SUPPLY in Oroville WA has ONE = 800-414-4462.

HIGH BUCK!! BOB ALLEN FORD in Overland Park KS has ONE = 800-676-0675. Be prepared for an outrageous price!

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has (1) 8BA-6384-A & (2) 8BA-6384 = 800-543-4959.

Edit: Do you have Dennis Carpenters 1948/56 Ford Truck Reproduction Parts Catalog? Prolly not (sigh) / Call 800-476-9653 and order one...it's free.

Page 31 (2011 paper version) = Flywheel Ring Gear -112 teeth - V8 = 8BA-6384 48-53 @ $35.00

I have all DC's catalogs from 1948 thru 1996 and don't own any of these old rolling piles of misery. I need them, because most of y'all have none, nor any Ford Parts Catalogs. (sigh)

The 1948/56 FORD TRUCK PARTS CATALOG is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for about 20 bucks.

Another choice, remove your ring gear, turn it over and reinstall it.

When I was younger in the '60's we didn't has extra income or reproduction parts so we had to make due with what we had. An old mechanic at the Ford dealer showed me this trick.

Knock off the old ring gear, since it needs to come off any how. Heat it up with the rose bud tip on your torch and get it nice and hot and put it back on the opposite way and you now have new teeth.

The starter has the bevel cut teeth and the ring gear teeth are straight cut as you will find when you get a new one. This fix saves the cost, time and you still have the same labor involved and it's nothing spent.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

What Cliff failed to mention is that engines stop in two places when they are turned off. spin your rin gear aprox 90 deg and you will have better luck .

JMO, you have it out, do it right. I've heard your suggestion before. Again, JMO.
