This is the first pickup, or anything for that matter, that I have had that has had a winch. It was on the pickup when I bought it and my thought was that it was an added bonus that would help for getting elk or deer out or maybe winching smaller blow downs out of the road. I didn't plan on using it to winch the pickup at all.

That being said, my hunting partner and I did find ourselves in an embarassing pickle. It pulled her out of a nasty road side ditch during the elk hunt this year. Drivers side tires, front and rear were over half buried in ice, snow and muck and the drivers side step was burried in the muck on the opposite side of the ditch. We got into the situation when snow and ice on the road combined with the steep super and up hill angle of the road let gravity take its course. The pickup slid sideways off the road into the hillside ditch. Ditch was a very deep "V".
We had to hook to a tree on the canyon side of the road and pull her out dead weight. Winch didn't hesitate. Pulled her back up onto the road and didn't seem strained doing it. Then we used it as a guide to help us on up the road for 50 yards or so just to make sure the pickup didn't slide sideways again. I've been over that road hundreds of times with deeper snow, but never really appreciated the side slope, super, it had until this time when it had a heavy layer of ice under the snow. Never been in that kind of pickle before and will be a very happy camper to not be again.
So, the answer is yes, the 9000i will do the job. Would I have felt better with a 12 or 15, yes.

If a 15K is available for the right price it would be better but, with bigger comes a bigger foot print. I saw a 15K on the front of an old style jimmy during our elk hunt. That thing was huge.

When I got this Warn 9000i winch you could look at it one of two ways: a. I paid too much for the winch but, got the pickup for free or, b: the way I like to look at it is that I paid a very decent price for the pickup and got the winch for free.

If you have enough cable there is always the option of doubling up the cable and getting 18K out of a 9K winch when you need that much pull.

That's true. According to some instruction manuals I downloaded from Warn last summer, you can also triple line. ****** blocks have to be able to handle the load. I guess the motor will handle it, you just have to take it moderately and take breaks to allow the motor to cool down.

From what I can see the horse power of the various Warn winches is about the same for the most part, it's the gear ratio's, cable sizes & lengths that are different. My 9000i has 125' of 5/16th with a 156:1 gear ratio.

I can add a little to the winch conversation, I have a 15K on my F350 that I use a lot pulling stumps and chores like that. The 8K on my jeep even with a 2 part line was just barely adequate. The 15K will just slide all four wheels on my eight thousand pound dually. I'd go with at least a 12K. Figure twice vehicle weight mired hub deep.

Here's a couple of pictures of the 40,000 gallon fuel tanks and pumping station I think I'm going to wind up with.

I think I may just make them a deal on the tanks and an acre of ground their on........

Sounds very reasonable to me. I think someone told me once that you take your veh GVRW, multiply by 1.5 and the result is the minimum for the winch size. That being the 9000i on my pickup is theoretically undersized.

With my primary intent in mind, if I get an elk, within winch & rope range, that is equal to my pickup GVRW let alone twice the GVRW, I'm going to be calling Guiness, Boone & Crocket and Jack Daniels, not the butcher.
Anyway if I were buying a new one or should I ever need to replace this one, it would probably be with a minimum rating of 12,000. I suppose I could upgrade to a 3/8th or 7/16th cable as well.

Were those part of the AF base heating/power generation or what? Those things are huge! Course you could probably fill them up in short order with your french fry oil and farm recycle.
