Bell housing question

I have acquired an 86 F250 donor truck with a 351 and 4spd......I'd like to swap the 4spd into my 88 Bronco to replace the tired 5spd that's in there plus I need that low granny 1st gear...........does the 300 use the same bell housing as a 351/302 ?? or is it entirely different ?

Just don't use the flywheel off the 351! It has a different imbalance then the 300's.

Go to a parts store web site and compare the part numbers of the different clutches.

Different part numbers = different clutches.

Possibly.

The Bronco should have a 10" clutch with 1 1/16" 10 spline input.

The 86 F250 could have either a 10" or an 11" with 1 1/16" 10 spline input.

So it depends on what size clutch the F250 has. But if the clutch is good on your Bronco you should be able to re-use it with the F250 transmission.

Thanks Ted.....Reps for you ! I wanted to hear it from someone who knows......rather than advance auto etc..........I know on my 70 roadrunner it is easy to switch from 10.5 to 11 inch.......and on some makes sometimes the flywheels are drilled for both pressure plates and clutches......do you know if this is the case for the 300 flywheel ?

Thanks and I do realize that......but I am also looking for the exact type of info Fordman is giving me....balance issues, what fits what hits, etc....can't get that kind of info from a parts store anymore......I am about to do a complete F250 drive train transplant to my Bronco.....but want the keep my 300.....not the 351 that's in the F250.....so this info is golden to me !

Most of my flywheels have been a single bolt pattern. But you can never say never with Ford parts. You won't know for sure until you have it tore down.

One thing to look for during the swap is the size of the pilot bushing in the end of the crank.

I have used an old mazda 5spd input shaft as a pilot tool for a 79 400 with the borg warner 4spd before. Other than older 4spd bearings being bronze and the 5spd bearings being needles (in my case anyway). I'm pretty sure they have the same pilot bearing I.D. and shaft spline count.

Good luck with your swap. I'd take a 300 over a 351W for a truck any day.
