Starter Question

Hello,
I would like some feedback on starters hi torque vs. the standard style. I need to replace my starter (360 engine) are the high torque models the way to go or not?

Thank you,
Vern

I use a regular Ford starter on my 428 with no trouble. Cranking compression is about 210 psi. Cranking timing (not idle timing) is 15 deg BTDC. I have no issues.

I seem to remember some people using those mini-starters because of exhaust heat affecting their old starter and I guess they figured that was the answer. I kind of doubt that was the most economical fix though.

I havn't the experience (as I never bought a high torque starter), but they seem like a lot of money when it's not needed. But that's never stopped many of us when it comes to wasting money on our engines... LOL.

But if you can get one at a price you're happy with, please go for it, but it would be nice if you came back and let us know how it worked out.

I would have bought a mini starter for my '74 for only one reason.
In order to be able to access the inside bolt easier.
Turns out I couldn't find one in the time I had.
I have one on my 292 and it works perfect.

mini-starters can help when having to deal with clearance issues- particularly if you have headers. i think that's where the heat comes in, as well- a stock starter can be pretty close to the headers.

When you have to remove the starter, get your headers up to the motor and re-install the starter before before you can bolt your headers up it makes a huge difference lol, when my stocker craps out I'm going with a mini.
