Hi All,
can anyone tell me if you can repair rusted cab mounts


Its on the passenger side of a 73 camper special. What is involved with fixing fixing these things?

 

That does not look like a cab mount. It looks like the bottom fender bolt. Anything can be repaired. They sell new fenders, new unuts, new bolts. If you truly have rusted out cab mounts, those can also be replaced.

 

Thank you for identifying it as a fender bolt. Do I need to replace the whole fender?

 

If that's the only spot on the fender you could easily weld in some new steel without making and visible damage. but I'm guessing you have a lot of rust that won't be as easy if you have this problem.

 

Hey when you replace a fender is there any other hardware you should pick up — like do the bolts tend to need to be replaced on a 50 year old truck or is there some sort of seal that goes in the gaps? I appreciate any advice. Thanks

 

I guarantee that if you have to remove 10 rusty bolts and 9 of them come right out the 10th will take another 2-5 hours to remove.

 

Id be more concerned with the condition of that inner rocker. IIRC there might have been a seal between the inner and outer fender inside the engine bay. I used some rubber roofing just for fun. Getcha a catalog or go online at Dennis Carpenter/ LMC etc. to get an idea of what you may or may not need.
All of the hardware you will need is at your local hardware store.

 

Yes the fender comes off fairly easy, and in this 1st pic you can see the place (black circle) the bolt goes thru and that is the sheet metal area needing repaired. And in the 2nd pic (the blue box) that is a body mount.



#112A70 is the body mount that is that cab. The R/H piece of 112A70 is what you see when you look inside the fenderwell.

 

And to get just the fender off, I remember it is 14 bolts total (?), but 1st remember to open the door all the way and get the ONE in the middle between the door hinges OUT, before you put it in a narrow shop. Lol
Next you remove the plastic inner fenderwell liner.
Then all the hard to reach ones that connect the fender to the outer grill shell.
Take the side marker light out to be able to see easier inside the fender while getting that very top bolt out.
Then a long row on top.



As far as JUST removing a fender. 1, yes wash that area especially if your plastic inner fenderwell liner is shot. 2 not really needed to, I would take the grill insert out to be able to see in there (but no need for headlight bucket removal). 3 yes on the back side of the fender. 4 they are talking about your rusty area bolt. 5 open the door. 6 all on top row.
