Black smoke

2006 F-350 6.0, Last few days Ive noticed small amount of black smoke on acceleration and turbo lag seems to be worse then normal. The center section of turbo was replaced about 2 months ago, few weeks ago HG's ARP studs. I feel like I dont have the power I should have any ideas? Sorry I know I should invest in one but I dont have ScanGauge yet. Thanks for any input

I know its hard to invest in the SGII after you dumped a Ton of money into already

You can pull egr valve and check it out see if its hanging open

But with Black smoke and Turbo Lag really need to check some sensors out

Maybe go to Oreilys or auto zone and have them read the codes for free see if anything pops up

where are you at Lots of helpful people that would come scan it for you if you was close

Sorry it took so long to get back, how do I tell if the egr valve is stuck open by looming at it sorry not really good with this motor yet as it is my first Diesel but learning a ton on FTE. It seems that the light black smoke is only when my AC is on could that have any affect ? And I just had turbo center section replaced about a month ago could I already have a problem? This is the first time I've owned the truck in the summer months and the smoke is pretty light not really heavy. Also would autozone or someone with proper tool be able to read DTC i don't have any CEL or Wouk I just be looking for sensor readings and if so which ones so I can report back to you. Thanks for input looking forward to hearing back

Not to hijack your thread but I am currently havin the same issue with my truck. Turbo is laggy and smoke until it spools then runs fine right? If so I've been tying to figure out what it is. I pulled my egr valve and it wasn't very dirty as it only has 10k on it. Mine is and '05. I'm gonna keep an eye on your thread and hope someone can help and I can steal some knowledge. Lol

Come on someone give some advice :-)

I found an easy way to prove your egr is causing the smoke,is simply to unplug the electrical connector. Your egr will rest in the closed position. Take the truck for a spin and watch for smoke. If no smoke, your egr is opening more than it should(when plugged in). Finding the cause of that will take more troubleshooting, but this can at lease help narrow down the trouble spot. ie Not your turbo. Keep in mind that running with the egr unplugged will cause a CEL after a short while.
I know this after playing with my 06 for several days recently trying to find the problem. Now fixed. The problem was the egr valve itself even though it was not producing any codes. It just caused terrible performance and lots of smoke under load at lower rpms. It took me a while to determine it was the egr because it was BRAND NEW!(but not from Ford)
Finally cleaned the old one and put it back in. Now runs good again, lots of power and no smoke.

This assumes you have already cleaned the egr.
