Do 2008 exhaust studs break?

I have a 2008 F350 with the v10, 55000 miles. When its cold I can hear an exhaust leak, it lasts for about 30 seconds or so. I am suspecting its an exhaust manifold bolt that is loose. I havent looked yet to find out. If its a loose stud/nut will it break if I try to tighten it. I would like to be able to just tighten it but if a stud is going to possibly break I think i will leave it alone for now.

right up till 2010 all the mod motors had the same studs (thus the same issue eventualy will occur)

chances are you already have a snapped stud, dont be surprized.

They changed on the 2010 engines? Or the 2010's have the same problem?

What did they change?

I suspose when one is broke the entire manifold has to come off, I am going to have to see which one it is. Maybe let the dealer deal with it, but not until its real bad.

Not necessarily. If it broke at the surface of the manifold, you can hold a nut at the end of the stud and weld the nut to the end of the stud and back it out.

I haven't heard enough data to know if the '05+ are at less risk or not. You're the person I've heard of who suspect it may have happened. It is possible Ford changed the alloy to make them less likely to fatique. I'd be rather disappointed if they didn't... Also possible the manifold mounting flange is thinner, which would also make them less likely to break. Lastly, just not enough time yet. It seems to take thousands of thermal cycles before the studs weaken and snap.

When someone invents studs that won't break, they will be rich. As it is, my '08 has 3 broken studs, at least they are easy to get to.

Im going to check mine today, I did notice the other day that I had moisture/water bubbling out of where the exhaust pipe and manifold hook together. It did this for a little bit then it quit. But it wasnt where the leak noise is coming from.

well I looked today and found that on the passenger side the front top stud is broken. Its up inside and I cannot get it out without taking the manifold off. Does any know what this might cost to have a ford dealer fix it. I dont want to attempt it.

I went out again to checked the other side a little better today and found one that was broke on the drivers side. I then reached up and grabbed an exhaust stud with my fingers and lightly pulled on it, the damn thing broke rite off, I cant believe it. Its not even coroded or anything. Now I have a total of 3 of them broke off. I took a flash light and looked at one of them and it looks like its broke off flush with the head, thats going to be hell getting that one out. Guess the dealer is going to make a mint off of me on this repair.

Hi Red,

3 of them, bummer for sure.... dang on an 08 with 55K miles???

I know you posted on my 2005 F350 thread (75K miles) where I am into changing these right now. By early next week I'll have the last 2 out on the drivers side one way or the other and will post there with pics.

Please let us know what the dealer says and cost.

Thanks

John

I checked with the dealer earlier this summer about my truck 2001, I only have one so far, but I have an extended warrenty and wanted to see if it would cover it, which it would not. Anyways ford gave me an estimate of over $2700. They want to pull the heads to do the job. I laughed then said no. Hopefully I can put this off for a few more years.

Does anyone have the number to contact ford warranty. My pickup is a 2008 with only 55000 miles on it, I asked the local ford dealership here if it was covered by some kind of a warranty. I thought maybe an emissions warranty or something but they said it wasnt covered. I would like to call them myself, it doesnt hurt to try.

I had a friend suggest getting one of those warranties that are advertised on tv and a month or two later turn it in and have them pay for it. Dont know if that would work or not, I dont think my consience would let me do it anyway.

Well I found a ford mechanic that said he would do my exhaust manifold studs for $500, thats both sides. He is going to do it when he gets off work in his own shop. I'm going to take it to him after the First of the year. He said the way they do it at the dealership is to take the fender wells out and go in that way. He is going to order the studs through the local napa store, he said they are of better quality than the ford studs. He said that when the dealer has them install them they make them use the ford studs but when he does them for himself and other people he uses the napa studs.
