were still on the front axle, but the rear got brought up. i just wanted something cheap i could install myself UNTILL i save up to get a tru trac or detroit in the rear axle. But like EOD said, i tow a trailer and i also heard the detroit chirps and is funky with a heavy trailer on the back of the truck. This is also why i was thinking tru trac but if i get in something nasty i want the detroit to be under it.

I'm still thinking you're a fine candidate for a lincoln lock in the front with manual hubs. Doesn't get much cheaper than that, and as long as you leave one hub unlocked, they work with minimal drama.
And keep in mind that although it seems having only 1 wheel driving in front is worse than stock open diff, in a way, it is better.
With an open diff, the tire with the leastamount of traction spins first. And as soon as it does, all power goes to it. The tire with traction gets nothing. Pull onto a muddy shoulder of a road and the passenger side tire in the mud spins with nothing happening on the drivers wheel.
With welded spiders and only one hub locked, that tire always gets power. Pick your lines so that tire is on the higher traction surface and it will do MUCH better than with an open. Lock the driver's side hub and it will pull right back onto road.
