Keep the '05 6.0L or trade in for '10 6.4L

So im in an odd situtaion here...
I have a 2005 F-250 6.0L with 87,500 miles and I just replaced the FICM and all 8 injectors. It is a crew cab lariat and been good to me but I am a little concerned about having to replace a EGR cooler or replace head gaskets. I farm and am looking for some end of the year expenses that are tax deductable. Thats why we are looking into trading.

The truck Im looking to trade is a private sale 2010 F-250 6.4L with 17,000 miles crew cab XLT, and he is asking $33,900 BUT it has a salvage title on it. SO, no warranty. Now I have a friend who has one tuned and DFP deleted and loves it. Would this be something to consider (tune it and DFP delete) since it has no warranty already? Ive done some reading and know that in shutting down the DFP and regen system you will avoid the high heat going through the turbos PLUS gain power and MILEAGE! Which I hear the 6.4 like fuel but my friend is getting 20 MPG with his tuned and DFP deleted 6.4. What do you think should I cut my losses with the 6.0 and get the low mileage 6.4L????

Don't think his is getting 20 mpgs...I have yet to see one that will. His lie-o-meter is telling him that but gallons used vs miles and I bet he is around 17 or so.

I'd look it over carefully as to why it is a salvage.

This motor needs to be used hard and maintained well. If you are one to pop the hood and check fluids all the time then this maybe ok for you.

Since you farm you most likely have a shop and equipment to do repairs if needed then this maybe right up your alley.

I'd strongly consider looking at it very carefullly and drive it considerable.

One thing though..it is not worth 33K with no warranty. Low 20's imho.

buy the extended warranty for the 05 and keep it. Do the 6.0 upgrades like you mentioned and have a very nice reliable truck. I would not even consider a 6.4 out of warranty. my 2 cents.

no way she is worth $30's for a used truck with Salvage Title

pass and keep your 6.0...or find another truck. Way too much money for that puppy.

look into the blue spring upgrade for ur 6.0. it should be done so you dont hav to replace any more injectors. if your ficm every goes bad again, send it to ficmrepair.com which is much better and cheaper than ford. if you dont want any problems with it, get some gauges like scangauge2 or edge cs/cts. then put on a coolant filter and flush out gold crap coolant and fill it with some good elc. u shouldnt have any other problems with ur 6.0. pm me if you wanna learn anything about it. also, an egr delete would eliminate the chance of many problems.

pm me also if ya got any q's

I agree with the others that he's asking too much for a truck without a warranty.

If you can talk him down, or find another, I'd highly recommend blocking off or (even better deleting) the EGR coolers in addition to the DPF delete and tuner.

I get 23-25 HWY MPG with my deleted and tuned 08' 6.4. It's the best truck I've ever owned, but ONLY after the modifications.

Also, you might save some money finding a low mileage 08' or 09', it's essentially the same truck. Just make sure you stay away from job 1 08's and you'll be fine. Make sure you have Ford give you an OASIS report on whatever you're looking at, it'll give you a good idea of what it's been through.

Ok the truck was hit on the driver side in the box and slight cab corner. No damage was done in front of the cab. The truck is fully repaired and cant tell anything was damaged. The frame wasnt damaged either. Just more info to discuss.

Knock about $10,000 off of the price and you're in the ballpark. He's dreaming if he thinks he can get $33900 for a truck with a salvage title.

it's still a salvage. take the truck to a Dealership and see what they offer as trade-in for it (the 2010 truck, not the 2005).

if they'll even take it

take their offer and add about $2k. that is the most I'd pay for the guys truck

There has to be more to the reason for the salvage. Just the box and slight cab corner would not have totaled it.

frame damage is why

that kind of sheet metal work on a virtually new truck means diddly for repair costs. The frame probably got tweaked to hell and was outside the specs the Insurance company was willing repair...or the new frame costs was too prohibative.

still, you get what you pay for. You're potentially going to drop $30k on a truck that most places won't even consider touching with a 10 foot pole. Heck, most states won't even let your register the vehicle because of that title

Is there a way to bring it to someone to see if the frame is straight? Would a dealership do that? I will try and get a picture on here of what the damage was

A bank/ credit union will only lend up to half of the NADA value of a vehicle with a salvage titled vehicle. My '05 F350 4x4 Lariat CC is a theft recovery and has a salvage title. My credit union said they would only lend half of book value. So I used that as my bargaining chip. I got a $28-$29k truck for $14,500 when I bought it a couple years ago. I got a deal since the truck was pretty much perfect the missing parts had been replaced.

I also bought it on the premise that I wasn't going to sell it anytime soon and would keep it until it dies. It has 92k miles so it's going to last me a very long time.

A thing to note is that if you buy it and you try to sell it, someone is going to only give you half of the book value at that time. You'll loose $$$ on it.

Hope this helps.

You can take it to a body shop and have them evaluate the frame to see if it is straight.
