A4LD history question

Does anyone know when the A4LD switched from 1 solenoid to 2? My Aerostar has a build date of 3/88. The junkyard interchange says the transmission swaps from '86 to '92...and doesn't specify an engine difference (and we all know THAT to be bullplop!).

My transmission is in good shape -when I changed the fluid/filter not too long ago, there was just a little...and I mean like half a teaspoon or so...of clutch material in the pan and the fluid was nice, pretty, red, and not burnt. I just want to know which transmissions I can use...just in case...

Per a discussion in the Ranger forums, it was noted the 87's had a single and the 88's were dual solenoids. Don't if this actually true or not. I had a link to the discussion but it did not copy. Try googling a4ld single double solenoids.

From what I can find, 86/87 had single solenoid. 89-92 had dual solenoid. 88 was a split year. Early models had single solenoids, and late models had dual. I'm trying to find out when that split occured.

The surest way to find out is to drop the transmission oil pan for a look-see. You probably need to change the filter and oil anyways.

Nope. I just did that. Read the first post all the way through, and you would know, since I said I just did that.

And besides, I'm far more interested in knowing when the switch was than knowing what's in my van.
