Sludge in primary fuel filter cap
I've had my truck for a couple weeks now, still love it! Yesterday I replaced the fuel filters--thanks to those who posted writeups!
These might have been the original filters--truck has 26000 miles. Both filters were nasty black. There was some orange sludge in the primary fuel filter cap. I wiped it out and wiped the filter housing out as much as I could before I reinstalled the filter. WTF was this stuff, anyone know?
Also my water separator wouldn't drain anything before this, now it does. Good! Who knows how long it's been that way...
Thanks again to everyone on this forum. I've been learning a lot.

It's Parafin....I found out about it from a diesel forum....the build up of this product...I guess is normal....I used to own a 2008 SD and has issues with....parafin. I guess you could call it a sludge.....do your best to keep it under control.....maybe a fuel treatment product.....I now own a 2011 SD and use Opti-Lube and I have not had any parafin issues....with the 2008 SD I never used Opti-lube....it was always the Ford fuel treatment product.......good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Smoke
, welcome. I think most folks on here would agree that using an additive with every tank of fuel is a good idea. As I understand it the ULSD will not sufficiently lubricate the moving parts of the fuel system and in the long term that will cause problems. Think about it. You have the EPA, ford, the fuel companys and the engine builder involved. lots of chanches for it to be screwed up. I use diesel Klean from walmart, others use the ford product and I think there are other choices.
