Steering play

I have a 2wd 1990 F-250 7.3 idi. The steering had some play in it when I bought the truck two years ago but it wasnt unbearable. Now at about 35 mph the front tires start to shift left and right uncontrollably until i pull the wheel to the side to stop it. I replaced my drag link a few months ago and got the tires aligned. All the other connections are good and free of play. Im guessing there's play in my steering gearbox. I've heard there's a way to adjust it to get the play out of it, but I dont know how.

If the gearbox is shot I have a 2wd 1991 F-250 5.8 gasser. I think the steering gearbox in it may be interchangeable with my 1990. I was hoping someone might know if it was compatible.

Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Yes the gearboxes are the same. Check the rag joint, and the shaft in the column. The nylon shims can wear out where the two halfs slide together.
