lost power

Drove my 1989 Ford pick up this am and it just quit on me. it has a 5.0 engine, and I checked for fire coming out of coil. None. Checked for voltage going to coil and it had it. Replaced coil and still no fire.Where do I go to now?

Most likely it's the ignition module on the side of the distributor. Very common for that to go dead on this vintage of Fords. With the proper tool you can R&R the ignition module without pulling the distributor.

Is there a way to check the module before taking it out?

There might be a procedure in the Haynes manual. But it would be simpler just to remove it IMO. The parts store can then test it beings you have a complete won't start situation. If the module would by chance test good, then the stator in your distributor is probably bad, barring a broken wire.

I would call the auto parts store(s) and see if they have the special tool to remove the module without pulling the distributor.

If the truck won't start by now, it's most likely the ignition module. With the stator it will usually start after while. With the module, when it dies it's dead for good in my experience.

I may have to eat crow. I just went out and looked at the '90 F-150 with a 302 that I just bought. On mine the back bolt holding the module on is too close to the thermostat housing to get any tool in there to get it out. The distributor may be able to be turned enough though to get that bolt out without pulling the distributor. In which case good reference marks should be made on the distributor and some part of the engine. That should get it close enough back in time to start the engine, but it would have to be retimed. Hopefully your distributor sits in there in a little different position so you won't have to do this.
