It's a book by Herb Caen, a now-deceased columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. The nickname for San Francisco stuck, as did "Frisco".
San Francisco was known as Baghdad-by-the-Bay long before Herb Caen wrote his book.
The name dates back to the days when EmperorNorton "ruled" TheCity, as it is known to San Franciscans. Not by "Frisco" a nickname most residents abhor.

Never heard that name before, but I live here only 27 years
Most of locals call SF a "City". It made news headlines few years ago when Police arrested a criminal who was presenting himself as local and call it "San Francisco"
I am up, checking my emails, the coffee and packing is next.
39F nights, I better check how much propane I have.

My aunt lived in The City in the late 1950's, early 1960's. She had a 3rd floor 'walk up' on Taylor Street, north of *** Hill, next to "The House of the Flag."
In 1956 and 1959, I spent several weeks there during the summer, walked the entire City. I'm a City historian, but I have lived in LA LA Land for over 60 years.
Did'ja know that the slot machine was invented in the Mission District (Valencia St.), by the Fey Brothers? R.(obert) Fey also manufactured pianos 1878/1906.
An event occurred @ 5:13 AM April 18, 1906, that ended R. Fey's piano business.
The City 'official' anthem was taken from the film "San Francisco" (MGM:1936). Music by Bronislaw Kaper and Walter Jurman, lyrics by Gus Kahn.
It only takes a tiny corner of, this great big world to make a place you love. My home up on the hill, I find I love you still. I've been away, but now...I'm back to tell you.
San Fran-cisco, open your golden gate, you let no stranger wait outside your door. San Fran-cisco, here is your wandering one, sayin' I'll wander no more.
Other places only make me love you best, tell me you're the heart of all the golden west.
San Fran-cisco, welcome me home again, I'm coming home to go roaming...no more.
Whiz on over, I'll play it for y'all on my R. Fey upright piano (#4, written in pencil on first key: 1/2/1879).
Thanks Bill...reading that and picturing you singing the lyrics really made my morning.
I was really hoping to be able to drive up for the day to hang out with everyone, but unless something changes at the very last minute it's not going to be in the cards.
I will start loading the Bronco up this afternoon, but will not put the sodas in until tomorrow morning. The plan is to leave early in the morning about 7am or so, as I have never been there, and will probably get lost at least once. If everything goes well, I should arrive about 10:30am.
Hey, I am on the beach between post 4 and 5 and see couple of Fords between bunch of Dodge and Chevys but doesn't look like any of our guys.
