Hard Start

So my truck had a real hard time starting this morning.

Environment Situation: 39 degrees outside. Truck parked on a slight hill with the nose on the high side. Plenty of fuel and oil.

The truck would turn over just fine and then almost start (for like a second) and then die right away.

I finally got it started by leaving the key in the on position for like 30 seconds and then it started. Could it be the glow plugs or the heater bowl?

Ideas?

Do you normally wait in "on" for a short time before trying to fire? You got to give the glow plugs a chance to heat the combustion chamber up.

How old is your oil? What weight oil are you running?

That fuel bowl heater isn't doing anything for you at 39 degrees. There are a couple guys on here that have them unplugged.

Yes I normally wait for the "wait to start" light to go out That did not work this morning. I had to wait like 30 seconds this time. I will have to figure out on the oil. I know it is Schaeffer oil. It is like 2 years old with 6 thousand miles.

The oil is a likely culprit. Since you are due for an oil change, I'd recommend starting there. Old oil doesn't flow well.

The GPs are on long after the WTS light goes out. On chilly mornings I usually give another 5-10 seconds after the light goes out.

get a plug in (accessory port) that will show the voltage. this will show you if you have the voltage drop from 12.5v to around 11.5v for when the GPR comes on. 39degrees should not be that cold for an oil problem imo. The GPR should stay on for 1.5-2 minutes at the coolness. You may have several GPs that are not working. 2 years with the same old may seem like a long time, but the 6 thousand (to me) is ok for a few thousand more. But it seems like you do not drive your truck very much. are you keeping your batts up?
