460 air intake?

460 air intake?
On my 89 f250 w/460 the air intake routes to behind the grill. It has kind of a snout/flap that curves behind the grill and appears to be blocked from getting the full amount of air that would be afforded if the snout/flap were cut off. Anybody cut the end of the intake tube off so it gets a straight shot of air from the grill? It seems that the reason for the curved end is just to keep debris from the air box. Seems like a good filter would keep the debris out and let this monster breath a little.

Go ahead and cut that flap off. It a poplular mod for the small block guys who have the air intake that mounts above the radiator support. They get a 460 intake tube that goes behind the grill and chop off the curved section for more airflow. I think it is more effective on the 87-91 trucks as the opening is closer to being directly behind the grill than on the 92-96 trucks. My friend with a 1990 F-250 W/351 just did this.

I removed the air restrictors via hack saw. I was worried about excessive noise but it sounds fine.I for the life of me do not know how that 460 could breath thru such small openings. They are about an 1 1/4" a piece. Maybe it causes the air to enter the tb's at an accellerated rate do to a ventri effect but it still seems like the 460 would need volume.

In my open air intake project I eliminated the intake "horn" on the aircleaner, the smallish intake in the radiator header and all that accordian tubing in between. The aircleaner housing itself still has all the stock fitings, nipples and connections
.
Clyde is pretty much a "warm weather" truck so I don't use the manifold heated air intake on start up, that was part of the "horn". If we're discussing the PCV hose, that runs into the air cleaner toward the back using the stock connection. There is nothing between the ~3X10 intake in the header and the aircleaner.
Hopefully I answered your question.

i own a 95 E350 EFI van which has an even more restrictive intake than the truck. no intake air horns in the small airbox just before the t-body, but has a small airbox mounted above the radiator that uses the same small airfilter as a 2L pinto. i converted the air intake to a K&N F350 filter and tucked it away in the driver side fenderwell after removing the battery and redoing the entire battery setup. and i fed it fresh air from an inlet in the airdam routed behind the bumper up thru the fenderwell.
to make this short, check into Unique Metal Products (UMP) Home Page for what many feel are the best air filters made. i shoehorned one under the van hood and used 4" alum tubing to do it.

A free and nice mod
Short story long, Brutis (My 87 F-250) was originally equipped with a carbed 460 and C6 trans . I was never exactly thrilled with his performance and downright horrified by his gas mileage.
Recently, I replaced the old worn out engine with a more modern EFI unit complete with the fuel injection, F3TE heads, and remote mount TFI .
I kept the C6, (I used a computer from a 460 with a 5 speed to do this) but overhauled it and used the gear sets from an E40D .
Man what a huge difference in the truck !!!!
However the EFI 460's air reduction horns (those littly bitty things in the intake hoses) coupled with the rain/snow flap on the core support to airbox ducting were obvious restrictions . So I spent some time on them with a saw .
This made little difference in off the line acceleration . (In fact I couldn't notice any difference) But yesterday those modifications came in to play when I had to pass a Semi. Then they were very noticeable, making them worth the effort and something I would recommend.
