squirelly rear end

when changing lanes at highway speeds, it seems as though the back of my truck continues to sway back and forth even after i have straightened out. almost like going too fast with a small trailer, it wanders a little. i can really exaggerate the problem by wiggling the steering wheel left and right a little. my leaf springs are cracked and broken all over, and i am replacing them soon. im hoping this will solve the problem. any other ideas? maybe sway bar bushings?

what is the condition of your frame crossmembers from the cab back? Mine are terrible and, instead of replacing them, I am considering having a buddy weld in some angle iron to stiffen the dimensional stability of the rear frame. Is the stance of the truck changed by the condition of your rear leafs?

Sounds like the center bolt is sheared and or the u bolts are loose, any signs the axle is sliding forward and back a little (a lot?) on what is left of the spring stack?

rear tires are wearing evenly. the frame is solid, il check for play in the u bolts next time im home before its dark out. the truck doesnt seem to be sagging in the back too much, but its definitely gotten softer over the last few years.

If the main leaf is broke, then that can cause issues. That is what keeps the rearend centered along with the center pin.

I had a '70 years back that was bad, but it turned out to be the differential. Seems the side bearings were worn out and it basically was walking the axles around(like moving an oar) and making the back end wander around. New 9" center section and it was back to good.
