Haha, I can relate! My F250 I bought the summer after I turned 16, I had all the money for it (only 1500 bucks), and the lift, tires, shocks, ect., and every little thing that that breaks or needs changing comes out of my pocket. And I don't know of anybody else in my class that has to pay for their own maintenance, or that had to pay for their vehicles. And I agree with you, it really does make you respect what you have.

Sharp truck, he's very fortunate to have something so nice at his age. Looks to be in excellent condition cosmetically, and it sounds like he has a bulletproof drivetrain. Teach him early on to use 2wd as much as possible and 4wd only as a last ditch effort and he won't get it buried.

X2, I learned winter driving and field driving on my permit, with dad in his 96 f150 2wd, when I got my 96 I rarly use 4wd. Just mostly when I'm in stuff I have no right being in.

I know the auto locking front hubs will be going bye bye for a set of real lock outs. Nice on those snowy days to leave the hubs locked in and use the 4x4 in stop and go driving when the intersections are iced up. Beyond snow, him and I will be having a discussion about paying for wrecked stuff that occurs when he is screwing around with his buddies and it will be clear that I will not be covering those expenses. The boat ramp is another place the 4x4 will come in handy.

There is rust believe me, I will be posting pictures after we get it up in the air. The exterior has been patched up pretty decent, but the chassis needs some attention.

Just an FYI, I have a '96 with the 300 and I also had an exhaust leak up high on the motor. It was the air injection tube. It is the long, straight tube that runs parallel to the head with six short tubes that connect to the head. It runs under the upper intake. The tube and fittings are a pain to find, but summit has them. Also, check out pciinc.com. They actually build the ones for summit. The whole deal will run about $100 if that is your issue. It took me about 12 hours to replace it as it was the first time I removed the intake. Now, it would take me about 2.

Good job on the truck for your son.

Unplug the harness from the front of the master cylinder unless you know for a FACT that this truck has had its recall done! Could be a fire waiting to happen.

That's funny, I have a '79 Ford F150 300/4 speed 4x4 in my driveway. It's my daily driver as a matter of fact.

I know he's happy to get that! I know I would be. That truck is beautiful.

I am sure he will be very happy with that truck. I am 15 myself and own a 1988 F150 4x4 great truck. I ended up trading my 1987 Plymouth Reliant for this truck it was my dad's truck. I believe if you are to start out on a vehicle it needs to be a old run down ford truck that way you learn how to fix it and you know that truck very well. Mine we paid 400 for and it didn't run and was kinda beet up now it is great.

The 4.9 I6 is an excellent choice for a first truck. Tough as nails, economical on gas and enough power to drive safely, but not enough to get into toooo much trouble! My first truck when I was 15 was a '59 F250 4X4 with a 429CJ/C6. Not really a good choice for a young gearhead, LOL. The only thing that went down faster than the gas gauge was the tread on the back tires. Didn't take long for dad to pull the 429 and replace it with a 6-cyl diesel from a 6000 Ford tractor. It wouldn't pull the hat off your head or get far enough into a mud hole to get stuck, but I could cruise all night on a couple gallons of farm diesel! Ahhh...those were the days.

Can you be more specific here as to the particular harness you are referring and its function?

Nope, I do security and integration. You might be thinking of dlibson. You should pop in on the MN Chapter sometime and definitely make an appearance at one of the GTGs.
