Tuner help, advice. suggestions welcome please

OK, here are the facts. 2008 F250, 6.4l diesel, stock engine, power train, 3.55 differential. I didn't buy this truck for it's fuel economy. I have installed an Icon 2.5 inch leveling kit and 35 inch tires.

I have been interested in installing a tuner, perhaps CAI and maybe even exhaust mods. The local diesel shop recommends and sells Bully Dog tuners. I've read enough to believe I don't want that brand. So questions are...

Can anyone suggest a diesel, performance, or other shop somewhere within driving distance of Des Moines Iowa that can do this type of work? And Any suggestions for what equipment would be the best?

I'm sorta looking at the H&S Minimax, of the Blackmax. Can these be run effectively without replacing the exhaust at this time. I know best economy and performance can be had by doing the dpf delete and replacing the exhaust. Currently I live in a state that does not do inspections, so getting rid of this is not a deal...now. Thanks alot, and here is the pic of my truck. It now wears a grey Buckstop bumper instead of the stock one.

H&S popularity is really growing fast. You may also look into Spartan.

Yes, you must modify the exhaust. This is done by replacing the DPF with a test pipe. Pretty easy. With your leveling kit, you should be able to removed the DPF yourself without paying a shop.

Thanks, I'm not a mechanic, and replacing the bumper almost cost me a thumb!
I will look for someone to do the work.

Can a pipe be placed in place of the DPF, enabling you to use the rest of the stock exhaust, or do you need to replace the whole thing?

Just the DPF. You also want to consider removing the DOC. (Cat). A simple DPF/DOC delete pipe will allow for the removal.

Would a muffler shop do this?

If you'll provide the pipe, I'm sure they'll bolt on the new pipe and remove your DPF.

I have a similar truck and looking to remove the dpf and doc with a tuner that will get rid of the regens only. Don't need more power. Just want to reduce the chance for damage to the engine.

Research the DPF-R.

I have the H&S Mini Maxx as well and love it, great customer service also. I know that with the Mini Maxx that you do not have to take your DPF off. It gives you an option when you down load it to your truck, (DPF in place) or (Removing DPF). Then when you do delete the DPF, you will have to redownload the tuner on to your truck selecting the DPF removed option. I'm not sure how the DPF would like the tunes if you left it on but it must do okay if they give you the option of leaving it on. You wont regret doing it guarantied.

I've never really looked at the DPF system on the truck. Are there sensors/electronics that go to it, or is the DPF sequence controlled by the ECM. My question is, if there are sensors, what do you do with them after taking off the DPF. I have looked at the exhaust options from H&S to delete the DPF/CAT. They include 3.5 and 4 inch, with and without bungs. Which is the bolt on size to match the stock pipes, do I need bungs. and should it be one or two piece? Again I'm not a mechanic, and won't be doing the install. But I want the right stuff so there are no hiccups at the shop!

Is the H&S CAI intake a good one, or should I go with something else?

S&B or aFe for the intake. The sensors will no longer be needed so without bungs is fine. Just have them leave the sensors in the DPF/CAT. There are quick disconnects that can be tucked away on the frame rail or other locations. 3.5" for the delete pipe to fit a stock exhaust. I chose two piece for ease of install. I'm doing it without a lift in my driveway. I don't see a performance difference between one or two piece unless you're racing for competition. (Weight of overlapping pipe and U-bolt).

Got the parts ordered, went with an AFE CAI. Also made an appointment at the local diesel shop to get the installation done complete with DPF delete pipe for the exhaust. I went with the Black Max instead of the mini, because these old eyes don't meed to be doing any more squinting than they already are. Looking forward to getting this all done on Jan 3rd.

One question, what does defuel refer to on these tuners. Lots of defuel parameters....no clue here.

Those are safety parameters. Your engine will decrease fuel flow when those parameters are reached. Ie: EGT- Factory setting is 1450. Once the EGT's reach that temp, the engine will momentarily slow the fuel to the engine in order to allow the EGT's to fall back to a safe range. You can set defueling for oil, trans, EGT, boost, rpm, etc.
