Can air bag be added to passenger side?
I have 99 crew cab which only has a driver's side air bag and I'm wondering if I can simply plug in a passenger's side air bag? I've recently replaced my entire truck wiring harness including fuse blocks and GEM module from a donor 99 which had the passenger side air bag. Is there a specific air bag brain box specific for either set up or is this something I can simply take care of when I get my replacement GEM module re-programmed for my truck?
Did all trucks with passenger side air bags in 99 have the air bag shut off switch with indicator light in the dash?
Thanks,
Drake

Yes, I'm sure the GEM module would need to be re-programmed. I'm just wondering if the air bag brain box or even the air bag control module needed to be replaced? I'm not referring to the GEM module or PCM.

My early 99 F-250 extended cab has the air bag computer right on the floor in the center behind a black piece of plastic. Its right on the hump above the transmission towards the front on the fire wall. I could get a picture for you some time if you want.
Have you had this truck since new? Could it have been in a wreck at some point in its life and one was never put it or had some one stolen it?
The air bag shut off switch was only on regular and extended cab models since the crew cab has alternative seeting arrangments for kids.
I have the 1999 sales brochure and it shows second generation air bags as standard equipment on all trim packages (xl, xlt, lariat) and calls out as the switch only being on the regular and extended cab versions.

Be careful!
Millions and millions of $$$ have been spent researching the deployment strategy of air bags.
There are deceloration sensors mounted in various places on vehicle bodies to give information to the computer on how and when to deploy in case of an accident.
If you get it wrong you could have a non working system or worse a system that deploys at the wrong time or the wrong way and cause more damage to your spouse/passenger than was intended.
.
Not trying to throw a wet blanket on the party, but really, if you educate yourself a little about the way that the safety systems work on vehicles, it will help you a lot in your decision process.
.
My truck only has a driver side air bag too and no wiring harness installed, but I don't want to mess with it because I don't want to make it worse.
Besides, my F550 has weight to it's advantage.
Try ramming a 3000 lb Prius into the front end of a 10,000 lb truck and see what happens.
