How-to: Spare tire Drop after 38G tank install...
So,
I had the 38G tank installed and I did not see any where where this is covered...
As I am new, I thought I'd contribute.... earn my keep as it were.
Parts:
- 2 six inch lengths of M14 x 2 all thread
- 2 M14 x 2 coupler nuts ( Coupling Nuts - Coupling Nuts | MSCDirect.com )
- 4 M14 x 2 Jam Nuts ( Metric Hex Jam Nuts - Hex Nuts | MSCDirect.com )
Notes:
- You have to buy the Jam nuts in a box of 50... I bought a box... contact me if you are doing this and I can send you some.
- Coupler nuts come in qtys of 5. I have 3 left so again contact me and we can arrange something.
- I still have enough all thread for at least 1 more setup cause it comes in 1 meter lengths.
Tools:
Hacksaw or sawsall
File
wrenches (22mm)
Anti-seize
Instructions:
This is pretty straight forward.
Use your cutting tool and cut down the all thread to 2 6" peices
File each end of the all thread so that there are no burs and test it with the coupler nuts.
on each peice of all-thread, thread on a jam nut and then a coupler nut and position the coupler nut half way on and tighten up the jam nut.
Take the rear spare tire bolt (the one with the loop) and thread a jam nut on.
Tighten the spare tire bolt into one of the all-thread coupler nuts and tighten the jam nut onto it.
Put the other bolt through the tire carrier and thread a jam nut onto it.
Thread the other all-thread onto the last tire carrier bolt and tighen the jam nut
Put the tire carrier back up into position and be sure you put anti-seize on the end that goes into the frame... and you are done!
Results:
One of the big concerns is ground clearance...
On my truck, with 265/75R16 tires and stock ride height for a 2WD I have 8 inches to the dome on the center bolt (lowest point).
That is about the same as the bottom of the rear diff.
You defiantly will not be off roading with that thing on there but for general on road and dirt roads it's fine.
Also, If you have the stock tire size (235/85R16) you should have about an inch more ground clearance (30mm extra).

here is what the front bolt came out to be...
And the rear...
and a look at the tire installed...

I had my mechanic put it in as I didn't really want to do it my self and he gave me a good rate. He said it went well.
he put the spare in the bed so I did that part.
I did not get home till after dark so no pictures last night... I am getting up now so I take a couple in a bit.

Here is Jim's (Rosewood Diesel) writeup on it...
Performance Injectors for 7.3L Ford Power Strokes
My guy did not mention any issues regarding the spacers and I don't have the skid plate so that may have made some difference. He also took Jim's advice and pulled the bed.
Oh, and I didn't bother painting the tank... we don't have rust here.

EDIT: I have called my bank about it to see if its them cutting me off or the gas station. The bank blames the gas station. I have talked to the managers of gas stations about it and they blame the banks. Go figure.

All I did was cut the oem rods in 1/2, stuck them in an appropriately sized piece of gas pipe and welded them together. Worked great. Been on the truck for years now.
