I just replaced my shocks on my 88 F350 and ended up replacing the lower bolts in the rear, and both upper and lower bolts at the front (dual eyelet style shocks).
Mine are metric grade 8.8 and 10.9, i.e. hardened.
The front bolts were severely worn which allowed the shocks to rattle around too much.
At the back, someone had replaced one lower bolt with a standard non-hardened bolt that was too small in diameter. This allowed the shock to move up and down on the bolt, which in turn, caused the bolt to move up and down and ultimately elongated the holes on the shock mount.
What ever you do, make sure you get the correct replacement sized bolts.
