Dual exhaust

hello i have a 1981 F150 ranger stepside with the factory 302. It had dual exhaust running to the back but my question is; Can i run the dual exhaust on both driver and passenger side at all? i don't like the look of the dual running down the same side then to separate sides. If you can help please contact me. Thank you

(gas tank runs on the driver side under the bed.)

You cannot run exhaust down the drivers side if you have a side tank. That whole heat and fuel thing is a bad mix. Also the proper terminology on a Ford is "Flareside".

Yeah i kind of figured. didn't know if heat shields for pipes or anything like that would work without taking tank out and changing it. Think i will run them like they were. thank you.

I actually prefer both the duals coming out on the passenger side, before the tire looks real nice if the pipes and/or tips are cut right. Like the 2nd gen Lightnings. After the tire is fine too, But that's my opinion.

There is really not much room between the driveshaft and the fuel tank. I wanted dual exhaust, so I moved the fuel tank to behind the axle and between the frame rails. Of course, I had to lose the spare tire. But now I have lots of room to run dual exhaust.

Good luck with your project, and welcome to FTE.

You can run 'em driver's side just fine. Just need to go outside the frame rail. It's how I've always done it on these trucks...

Sorry this one's sad, but illustrates the point...

If you do decide to run the exhaust outside the drivers frame rail inspect the side tank and replace if need be. My tank leaks a bit at the top seam when its over half full which i've found to be pretty common with this era of F series.

I went with a nice single exhaust, the other options were a cat back dual system which i thought was kind of a waste of money or full duals for twice as much.

My (for 2 more days) '82 351W has the duals running down the passenger side and then the driver's side crosses over and both pipes come out behind each rear wheel. I prefer that because it sounds so good from behind - stereo, like duals should sound, alternating side-to-side.
