1996 F250 4x4 5spd 460EFI upgrades

Alright so my Brother-in-Law has the go ahead to do some work on his truck.

It is a 1996 F250 4x4 5spd 460EFI with about 30k on a rebuild, so the motor runs great as is.

He has a cracked exhaust manifold so he wants to do headers for sure.
Budget is about 1,000$ including all parts and labor.

Currently has dual exhaust, which will be modified to attach to the headers by an exhaust shop.

My big question is which parts to go with.

These are what i'm looking at for headers
Hedman 89510 Hedman Hedders Standard-Duty Uncoated Headers

And i'm considering a camp/spring upgrade as well.
Will this cam work? And what valvesprings need to go with it?
Crower 22917 Crower Beast Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cams

Heads or head port and polish is probably out of the budget.

If we go with a cam it will need tuned based on what i've read, so is it EEC4 or OBDII? Whats the best way to go about tuning EEC4? I'm familiar with tuning newer mustangs and powerstrokes.

Thanks in advance!

I dont know where you are but if rust is any issue at all, I would stay away from mild steel headers. They will rot off in 2 years or less.

And that cam says nothing about being speed density friendly

Located in NW Arkansas, so rust isnt a major issue, but is certainly a consideration.

I did say it would need a tune if we got a cam.

Any more input?

You are SEVERELY limited w what cam you can go with w speed density. Dosent matter if you have NASAs computer to tune your truck

That page dont load for me. But it is common knowledge that SD is old tech and cant be tuned to well So MASS AIR is swapped for tunability.

The 97 Cali trucks had Mass Air stock

The easiest/best systems to tune are MAF OBDII. In order to tune a speed density system you need to have the software, a burner and PROM chips. An aggressive cam requiring a custom tune will be useless without heads to support it, they'll still be choking the engine. Start with a basic tune up and open up the exhaust. Go with stainless or coated headers, even without road salt mild steel ones will rust. Pacesetter is usually the brand of choice around here.

Bump TTT.

Looks like a cam isnt gonna be possible right now, whatever he has done will have to be by a shop, so a cam would push him over the grand budget.

Any direct experience with those headers? Are the coated ones worth it?

For some FREE hp. You can cut the air horns out of the intake tubes and bump the timing as far as it will go before pinging.

Some Cheap Hp can be had by removing the stock cat and muffler and replacing them with some high flow ones.

Another thing to look at is a BBK dual 61mm throttle body

I had planned on telling him to modify the airbox, and have a few write-ups bookmarked about it.

Truck already has dual exhaust and muffs, so the headers is about all he has left, without screwing up how it runs.
