Starter Issues

Hey all so my starter started grinding a few months back and I couldn't replace it at the time so I had no choice but to keep the bad one in for some time. Went to start it the other day and it quit. So I replaced the starter, solenoid, and battery. Hooked it all back up and the solenoid would just click. Pulled the starter back out and noticed that there was no bridge between the posts on the solenoid like there was on the old starter. Made a make shift one with some wire and put the starter back in the truck. Now the starter spins but does not engage the flywheel. I do not know what to try next any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The truck is a 460/c6 and I do not know the tooth count on the flywheel. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. I did forget to mention that I did take it back and confirm that it is in fact the right starter.

Your flywheel's teeth ok? Cause my starter did the same thing and found out my old starter ruined my flywheel..had to get a new one.

Also take out your starter and hook some wires up to the leads on the starter but keep the starter tight because it will move if you don't...see if the starter gear will come all the way out

No idea on the fly wheel condition and I hope I don't have to tear into it that far...

As for the bench test, that answered my next question, I will give that a shot in the morning. If it does not come out what should I do next? Thanks for the info.

I tried bench testing it and the gear did not come out, it spun but stayed stationary. I took it back to the parts store and replaced it with a new one, I put it in the truck hooked everything back up and tried to fire, but now all it does it click. As previously stated, there is a brand new starter solenoid, so I don't know what to try next. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

What just clicks? Starter or solenoid? Did they bench check the starter before you left the store?

If the solenoid just clicks then there is a probability that the battery is discharged.
