Need Oil Change Questions Answered

I want to do my first oil change at the dealer since they'll look the truck over and since I just bought it a month ago I figured that can't be a bad thing. Is the Motorcraft semi-synthetic oil good what about the Motorcraft oil filters they use? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about the motorcraft oil but im sure it is good to use. Motorcraft filters are what you want to use that or racor filters. racor makes the filters for motorcraft if im not mistaken. As far as oil goes prob most would agree to use Shell Rotella 15w 40 or the rotella synthetic 5w 40.

I use Rotella T6, it's a full syn. and like stated, motorcraft or racor filters only.

Call there service dept. and see if they have it, if they don't go to walmat get a Motorcraft oil filter about 18$ they have them FL-2016 1/3 the price from Ford get 4 gallons of T6 5w40 use 15qts do it yourself or take it all to Ford and have them do it for a few bucks.

I think you want to learn how to change it yourself, and the suggestions here are good ones. But I also understand why you want to have the dealer do the first oil change as part of a new owner inspection. I'm with you on that.

They will not use synthetic, unless you pay a ridiculously high price for the Motorcraft product. I think you should just let them use their normal Motorcraft 15W/40 non-synthetic oil. Dealerships sometimes have a quicklane oil change service, and you want to ask them specifically what oil and filter they are going to use, and insist on ONLY motorcraft stuff.

Before all the regulars here jump on me, let me explain that a top condition 6.0 should run fine on 15W/40, even in the winter. Starting out with that oil as a baseline will be a lesson about the condition of your FICM and injectors, and even the batteries. If it starts and runs great in winter temps with that oil, you will have confidence that things are in great shape. It may run better on 5W/40 synthetic (almost certainly will), but it should run good on 15W/40. If it does not run well, find out why not and correct the underlying issues.

Showing up on day one at the dealership with your own oil and filters under your arm is not the way to go, IMO. Show some respect for the experts.

Then when you know all is well, and you are ready to start changing the oil yourself, buying Racor filters online and Shell Rotella T-6 will be what you want to do.

So I got the oil change and good thing. I the previous owner went to gm good wrench and had some oil filter adapter put on and used a smaller filter which was cracked down the middle. I good thing I went in. The only thing is that they gave me 5w30, I'm guessing that'll be fine for Colorado driving?

Oooh, disaster averted. Did you have to pay for a new filter cap?

As for the 5W/30, I guess that is because you are in Colorado, and they know how to handle the tough winters. We have to assume they used diesel oil, API rated CJ-4. If so that should be fine for the winter, although Ford warns against towing with that lighter oil.

Yes they put in diesel and replaced and I had to pay for the new filter cap but at least it's done. From now on its oil changes at home only but at least they got to look at it and fixed the issue.

Total oil change and new part was 130 so I figured it was worth it.

You've got that backwards...Racor makes the Motorcraft & Navistar filters; as well as the Fram for this application. The brand/style of oil you use is up to you. I've been running a syntheic blend (Mystic JT8) in my truck for the last 65k miles and like it. Others swear by Rotella T or Valvoline Blue...both are good oils; just a little too pricey for me. Something else, make sure you keep up with the PM...do 'em on time. If you don't your doing just as much damage to the engine.

+3 with Bill on running 15W40 in the winter; ain't nothing wrong with it.
