I guess you're talking about rear brakes?

The starwheel goes both ways, but one way is a lot easier and if you spin it that way the shoes should move out. If they go the other way, then you got them backwards.

Assuming the adjuster was installed correctly, you move the end of the lever you're holding up to tighten. The side of the adjusting star facing the access hole has to go down, so your hand has to go up...

On self-adjusting brakes, there is a pawl on the opposite side of the access hole that must press the star wheel DOWN to adjust it tighter, so that means on the opposite side, where you are attacking it with your brake tool, it must go UP.

I can absolutely guarantee that the direction the starwheel spins is not universal on every vehicle.

I have ripped the drums off....as the stars go
DOWN to tighten THE BRAKES CAME UNADJUSTED (solid but to the floor ) after pushing snow for 4 hours.....THE PARTS STORE guy said for sure there is no left right drivers side........now they are tight again.....but every diagram says the starwheel threads go forward.......to make this thing go up to tighten with the tool, I put the starwheel threads to the right or rear....do I have my BASS AKWARDS OR WHAT ???

If you swap the self adjusters left to right they will self un-adjust. One side has left hand threads. Pull on the self adjusting cable and release, watch the adjuster lever, it should turn the starwheel in the right direction to tighten the brakes.

This should help ya out, (disregard the part circled in the diagram, it was for another purpose)

And yes there most certainly is a left and right sided self adjuster, one of them (don't recall which at the moment) has left handed threads.

Some kids got no business working at auto parts stores, the shear volume of miss information given out these days is just ridiculous.\

Edit:
I should have mentioned the opposite side would be mirror image of this side, do not install the same on both sides. Side in diagram is the left side (drivers side). Example, the self adjuster cable and its adjuster lever goes with the rear shoe both left and right sides.

And might be worth mentioning you'd only need one side wrong to adversely effect pedal travel. Say for example the parts guy sold you two "left side" adjuster screw assemblies rather then a right and a left set.
One side would work to back the shoes off over time as you used the brakes causing excessive pedal travel, the other would adjust the shoes properly. It only take one side and not necessarily both, seams the adjusters are stamped with a "R and "L"? If not you can work it out using the picture make sure you have them on the right side.

On mine, the auto adjusting lever pushes the star wheel up to tighten. This means the inner side, by the adjusting hole in the backing plate must go down to tighten...

that is what i seem to recall too.been a while though.
down to tighten the drivers side and up to tighten the pass side.
it's not exactly all that hard to figure out though.she only wants to spin one direction.if it spins easy the wrong way on ya,then guess what? you need to tear it down and replace your adjusters anyway lol.if you don't then your brakes wont remain adjusted, and they wont self adjust.
