Need a new motor, whats my options?

my dads motors shot and he needs a new one. were looking for a used one but we need to know what exactly to look for.

his truck is a 95, maf, 5.0, auto 4x4.

what year 5.0's do i need to look for? 94 and 95? will any year work since he has the wiring harness?

Any year will do, just won't go too far back or it won't be a roller.

a friend and i pulled a 5.0 from the junk yard for his truck. I think he paid $170 for the complete motor. he pulled it apart, cleaned it up a little, replaced the gaskets, and about 3 days later he had it in his truck and running. that would probably be the cheapest route if you have the time and know-how

No, i think the 5.0 is a roller since 1989, and some years before it was roller-ready (please correct me if i'm wrong).

Any 5.0 will drop right in there but the list of Best-Worst replacements would be...

'87+ Mustang 5.0HO
'96+ Explorer 5.0
'94+ F or E series Truck 5.0
'93 or earlier truck or car 5.0.

thats probably what were going to do. how much can you expect to pay for an engine at a junkyard? when he told me about it my first question was can it be rebuilt and he said later on maybe but for right now he just wants a jy motor. which is cool for me because that means i have a set of heads and intake i can port and polish lol.

hes trying to keep it as cheap as possible because moneys tight but what all would you guys do? just replace the gaskets?

For 5.0 motors it goes something like this..

'86+ in Mustangs.
'89+ in Crown Vic and other full size cars that didn't get a HO(could be off a little on that one)
'92+ in Trucks

Yes, the motor is the same with the exception of some additional sensors that you can simply ignore except for the Explorer motor where you have to replace the EDIS with your distributor.

Conanski, what features make the 87+ Mustang engine desirable above those in the V8 Explorers?.

were checking out the pull a part. theirs none near us but my parents are going to canton this weekend and theirs one there. at the pull a part you have to pull the motor by your self correct? you do everything?

conanski i know ive asked you before but what does it take to switch the a 5.8? you need the motor, the wiring harness, and a different flexplate right? anything else? he's considering one of those as well.
