I have a 1999 F-250 Super Duty with the 6.8 V-10. For the past few months, I've had a problem starting it on the first try. It cranks but won't turn over. I have to turn the key off and try a second time. It always turns over on the second attempt. Yesterday I turned the engine off when I stopped to get the mail and then tried to start it back up 30 seconds later. Nothing. I have full electrical power and the battery registers 12.6. I removed the starter and took it down to Autozone. They tested it and said it was dead. I just installed the new starter and still nothing - exactly the same. I'm lost. Now what?

 

Are you getting power to the starter?

 

on a 99 there is a solenoid on the right inner fender behind the vac tank. it clicks everytime you turn the key to start....does it????? and when it won't start try hitting it lightly wth a whammer whilst the key is in the start position...

 

That was it, thank you 99f350sd! My new starter already had a solenoid attached to it so I never thought to look for a second one. I replaced the solenoid on the inner fender and the truck fired right up. Thanks for your help.
