I have an 08-11 Tailgate on my 2002 F350. Last weekend I had the panel off while I was re keying the tailgate lock and I could not see much down by the emblem because there was bracing and stuff in the way. Like Tylus mentioned in his post the bracing may need to be notched but it looks like its doable

well...I'd love to show you pictures of the harness and the tailgate install process. can't seem to find them. I can link you to the place to buy it though.
3M - CHG-2016-J01010-KEP - Rectangular Connectors - Connectors - Allied Electronics

You connect 7 wires to the 16 pin connector (power, ground, reverse trigger, camera -, camera +, Compass -, Compass +)

there are 2 tiny tabs on either side of the connector. you shave those off and the 16 pin connector fits onto the mirror like it was made to fit there

there are 2 cameras and 2 mirrors floating around out there
2008-2010 style and a 2011+ style for both. each does the exact same thing. the wires change locations on the connectors and colors. refer to the diagrams below to figure out which camera/mirror you have.

2011+ Camera Harness - sorry, don't have one of these. I know a few of the wires changed color, but I'll have to search a bit to figure out which are which

I had to custom build a 16 pin harness for the mirror connector. You can order the factory harness for $50, or build one like I did for $15.

Wiring wise, it was very easy to run 2 wires from the tailgate to the cab. I used stereo RCA cables. Had a 10ft section that I split and joined end-to-end.
Sorry to bring an old thread back up.

Tylus, i like what you've done but i've got a couple questions.

Can you actually get a tailgate handle with camera that suit the earlier style trucks (mine is 2004). I didn't think you could ?

One thought i have had, is to buy a 2008+ tailgate handle with camera mount and butcher it up, fiberglass this to the current 2004 handle, then smooth and spray it all up.

If i were to go for a different camera, do you have any idea if it would have to be PAL or NTSC to suit an F150 mirror ?

My current mirror doesn't have any wiring going to it, so i'd make the complete loom. I assume it's as you've stated so shouldn't be too difficult. Just solder some RCA ends onto the respective wires, along with the power wires etc.

Cheers

Gordon

You could probably graft a handle/mirror, but that's beyond my skills.

You could always grab a 08+ tailgate and just swap them

I have not installed one myself, but I have been in the market for a camera. One problem I see with having it in the tailgate is that I find myself backing up a lot of times with the tailgate down. It would be good for backing up to trailers. just my .02. I think they are cool but I think I would rather have one mounted to the bumper or something.
