F350 diesel help!

Hello, I am new to the forum and would like some advice concerning my 2001 F350 7.3 diesel truck. I have been having a few problems with it.

1st) The truck seems that it needs to be plugged in, in order to start even when it is 35-40 degrees out. Is this normal?

2nd) when I put the key in the ignition, turn and wait for the warm up, then try to start, it cranks hard, then the wierd part is, that when I pull the key out of the ignition the truck will continue to crank and try to start. Is this a ignition problem, or relay, or something else?

any help or advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Grant
