You can lay the cover on a bench, and drive out the seal with a punch. To install the new seal, go purchase a seal driver set.
10 Piece Bearing Race and Seal Driver Set

and apply a very little amount of grease on the circumference of the seal, and the inner rubber and carefully drive it in. If you can not find a seal kit, then you can use a piece of wood, but be careful or you will damage the seal. You are probably going to wash the cover in a parts washer and dry it with air, then paint the outside a nice shade of blue, or chrome...I job well done is appreciated by all.

A big socket is great for removing/installing the seal ,you will also need a harmonic balancer puller , you can get them cheap at autozone .
don't forget to put some oil on the seal /crankshaft , i've seen them rip from being dry started . then you get to do it again .

You should turn the crank a hair more to line up the points exactly. Yes, it looks like you are doing a great job.

Yes you have it correct... Line up the circles. The triangle is 4 degrees advanced and the square is 4 degrees retarded.

You are welcome. There are many on this website that could help you on your questions. I am not a FE guru, and have learned from others. Unfortunately, some of the high performance guru's like Barry and Maxtor and others do not post here anymore. I learned a ton from them, and am still learning. You can play it forward and teach others the things you learn.

Yes it looks good. Did you remember to put loctite on the cam retaining bolt?
The ware on the gears is normal for a very high mileage fe. Where is your oil slinger? Running a FE without one could cause those deep grooves even at low mileage.

I have the oil slinger and put it on after the pic just kept it off to show the new set I'm wondering if the wear on the gears could be insufficient oiling?

If the snout behind the balancer has grooves worn in it from the crank seal check out a repair sleeve.
