Towing w/ 2010 6.4ltr DRW

Hi guys, I just added to the garage with a used 2010 F350 DRW 6.4ltr and I'm currently in the market for a 41' toy hauler. My question is, how will the 6.4ltr handle the 18,000lbs of the loaded toy hauler? Does anyone pull that kind of weight on a regular basis, and if so any input on what to expect. We go to West Texas and New mexico camping so hills will be plentiful. My second question is what your thoughts of removing the DPF and adding a SCT tuner to help with the power...? Thanks again...

I don't tow that kind of weight, but many do. The 6.4 PSD will handle it just fine. If you want a tuner and do the whole DOC/DPF delete thing, then I suggest Spartan or HS. As I understand it, SCT is getting out of the DPF delete type tuning, so if you were to go and buy 1, you may not get support for it later.

You won't have a power problem, that really isn't a lot of weight for these trucks. Removing the DPF is a good idea for the health of the engine but not the health of the warranty, really a double edged sword. If you are vacationing a lot like that I'd probably rather have a no questions asked warranty than a few more mpg.

You will like tha ability to put it on cruise control and then just roll along. I find that mine runs best at 65 mph with the heavy loads.

Another tip that I live by. When heavy towing I don't shut down for fuel stops..that engine bay gets mighty hot. If you ever feel the fenders even from the outside they will make your hand smart a little.

I do pop the hood and check for a full degas bottle and take a visual of stuff but since it is so hot I leave it running.

Which axle do you have; 3.73? IIRC there was a change for later models in attempt to improve fuel economy. My 08 is a job 2.

I have 4.10 and although I have not pulled 18K I don't think it would be an issue. Mine is thirsty, but she pulls a load sweet.

I am with you on avoiding mods to protect the warranty. Good luck with your truck.

I pull a 41 footer that has a ready to go weight between 16,500-17,000 lbs. The truck pulls that weight just fine, but toy haulers are notoriously pin heavy and if you care about such things you might run into trouble on that point. Mine comes in at around 4,300 lbs on the pin. With that, plus a full load of passngers I'm getting pretty close to the limit on my axle. I'm relatively ertain that pulling my specific camper you'd be over the limit for your truck. That's if you care. Some don't.

When shopping for your toy hauler pay no attention to stated dry weights or pin weights. Almost without fail they don't even come close. A good place to get some info (and bs) is over on rv.net. You'll find someone there with experience with just about any toy hauler you're likely to find.

Unless I'm mistaken your 2010 has the same running gear as my 2008 with the 4.30 rear. When loaded for towing with full fuel, an Air Safe (read heavy) hitch, two pax and a 60# dog the rear axle carries 4,100#. I doubt your hauler has a pin weight which would put you over the rear axle rating of 9,500#. With a 15000# fiver I'm carrying 7,000# Enjoy.

You have a 4.88, right? The best he will have is a 4.30 and because its a 10 I would bet it's a 3.73. I think that RAWR is tire specific, if you upgrade the tires it changes the pratical rating. Granted, the little decal on the door doesn't change but you get the improved handeling. I towed my Mobile Suites (around 17K) for a year with a 7.3L F250 short bed extended cab. just added air bags and 19.5 inch wheels and tires. Pulled and handled OK. Not near as comfortable as the dooley but I felt safe with it.

I've got 4:30s in mine thank god. It was tough to find since it seems the bulk had the 4.88s and I hate to think about the mileage in one of those.

I pull a 14.5-15K 42 foot bunkhouse, which is not as heavy as some toyhaulers, with relative ease. I have a '10 DRW 4x4(in my sig) that is stock. Want to eventually take off the DPF, however with only around 14k on the clock, I will wait a while longer due to warranty. Love the truck. Plenty of power and very stable pulling that kind of weight. Happy camping!

Thanks for the advice...I just went to look and see what axle I do have, shows axle 3L on the sticker. Anyone know which one that is? I get pretty crappy mileage now, 10-11mpg figrd manually, so if it's the 3.73 I gonna be shocked!!

I checked out the DPF-R+, I like what I've read so far but it all depends on how she pulls stock. If I need the extra 70hp, I'll get the R+ and a powerstroke67 replacement exhaust pipe.

A good friend of mine has the same toy hauler as the one I'm considering and says he cruises at highway speeds with no problem. He's got a 06 F250 SRW 6.0ltr with a programmer w/ 40hp. That makes me feel good about my truck as I know how my 6.0ltr pulls. Thanks again guys...
