Dyno run of '94 7.3l IDI backed with stout E40D (finally) 189HP/526 ft-lb!

"1994 F350 crew 4x4 SRW, Upgraded HD Auto Trans, Banks Transcommand, Banks Sidewinder Exhaust, ATS Turbo w/ 60-1 compressor wheel upgrade (by Typ4), DPS "Turbo Cal" Pump, DPS Stage 1 Injectors, New heads with "some" valve work , Snow Performance Stage 1 Water Methanol Injector System, Autometer Gauges, Custom Leather Interior w/ 2011 Super Duty Center Console

DPS Turbo Cal Pump
DPS Stage 1 Injectors
ATS WG turbo (WG blocked) w/ the 60-1 Compressor wheel upgrade (done by Typ4)
Banks Downpipe and Exhaust
New Trans. Done by Aamco w/ all their heavy duty goodies. It's a Single Disk Torque Converter (with Billet cover) and it stalls @ 1350. Its freaking TIGHT.
Banks Transcommand
Some Valve work on the heads. 3 way valve job w/ 2 degree interference.

I think that covers it unless I've forgot something. The bottom end is a stock 230k mile engine.

The Dyno used today was a Mustang MB1000. It's an almost brand new dyno, i think they've had it installed 2-3 months or so. This shop is a Class 8 emissions shop certified by the state, and they also can use it for guys like me that just wanna know what their pikcups are doing. We did have RPM pickup to get a true torque reading today. Under load on the dyno it built between 15-16 psi without any surging (like I sometimes get on the street)

A total of 3 runs were done, I have printouts of 2. The first run was a flop as it kept wanting to kick out of drive and we had spiking issues, so it was aborted, no need for a printout out of that nonsense. Run #2, Torque converter unlocked and we got a little spike in it as well. Run #2 shows 207 rwhp, and 652 ft lbs. I'm not claiming these as my numbers guys.
Run #3 went flawlessly and results were 189 rwhp and 526 ft lbs. This run I felt was clean and a good representation of where my pickup stands right now.

I do have the printouts for both run 2 & 3 and will upload when I can (see first paragraph) The reason i bring up run #2 is when you see these graphs, outside of the spike in run #2, the rest of the charts look very very similar. I had my 2 young girls with me, and after being at their shop for about an hour they were getting restless. I'm certain if I would have asked for a few more passes they would have gladly done it, and if my kids weren't getting nutty I would have done it.

Overall I'm fairly pleased with where it's at today. I was a little surprised to be below 200 rwhp. My buttometer apparently needs recalculated, as I was estimating 220. I'm certainly pleased with the torque, and how low it comes on. I'm over 500 ft lbs @ 1480 rpm. I specifically had my torque converter set to stall @ 1350 rpm, and its a tight tight tight converter. I know it was locked on Run 3.

I'll need more time to digest and certainly looking for everyones feedback. Initial thoughts are inline w/ why I'm going with a different turbo setup. Don't get me wrong, what I have is fantastic, I just want more. I'm not looking to have a engine that kicks butt @ 3k+ rpm. I want something that uses the available torque down low. Pulling trailers in Colorado rarely means high speeds. I wanna get more air into her below 2000 rpm where she likes to run. Im now more convinced if a guy wanted a cheap turbo setup, and didn't care about top end performance, that an HX35 would really rock it out. "

when asking for dyno predictions ahead of time, many Zf5 owners estimated high 300 low 400 torque values.
it's nice to finally see an E40D in back of the IDI come out and play.

189HP? That's it? With 500+ torque? Weird. NICE though!

He would of gotten more with a C6

Horsepower numbers mean very little, it's the torque that counts.

too bad thats a bunk run and it the readout of 526 is no good. He didnt have a torque converter lockup switch, that is why the sheet looks so funny, you can even see EXACTLY where the TC starts to stall then locked and shuttered the rollers giving a false readout. Its called torque spike, and then the engine doesnt have the power to keep the band up, so it dives rapidly, then smooths out to where its ACTUALLY producing power.

Torque is multiplied by gearing. The dyno expects the trans to be in 1:1, but rather the TC unlocked puts it in 2:1 roughly, until the lock.

He is more like in the 190hp/385tq range.
